FIFA Women’s World Cup: USA vs Vietnam Odds

USA Kick Off Title Defense

Vietnam Make Women’s World Cup Debut

The USA Women’s National team won the last two World Cups. In 2019, the USA defeated the Netherlands in the final 2-0. Still ranked number one in the world, the USWNT kick off their title defense vs. Vietnam on Friday. Vietnam are making their World Cup debut and are being thrown directly into the fire. In what is expected to be a lopsided contest, we’ll look at the USA vs Vietnam odds.

USA vs Vietnam

Date, time:
Location: Eden Park, Auckland, New Zealand

Head-to-Head

The US Women’s National team and Vietnam have never before played each other in any World Cup matches, as Vietnam are making their World Cup debut. In fact, this will be the first-ever meeting between these two sides in any competition. The USA has lost just two times in 64 previous matches vs. AFC teams.

New Generation for USA

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 1
    • Next Match: July 26th vs. Netherlands

Soccer fans might recognize some names on the US Women’s National team roster. Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan have been the team’s mainstays for over a decade. Rapinoe is retiring later this year, so this will be her last hurrah as a USWNT player. Rapinoe and Morgan finished with six goals at the previous World Cup and could be key players again.

Due to an injury to captain and defender Becky Sauerbrunn, coach Vlatko Andonovski must tinker with his lineup. It is likely that 2022 NWSL Defender of the Year Naomi Girma starts at center back along with Alanna Cook.

Catarina Macario, Sam Mewis and Mallory Swanson also missed out on the squad due to injuries. Regardless, the USA vs Vietnam odds price the USWNT as heavy favorites.

A new generation of players is here to carry the torch for the USA. Sophia Smith, a 22-year-old forward, won the NWSL’s MVP award last season. Girma is also just 23, and Andonovski called up 21-year-old Trinity Rodman and 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson. Some notable veterans in the squad that complement the youth movement are Kelley O’Hara, Crystal Dunn, Julie Ertz, Lindsay Horan and Rose Lavelle.

No one comes close to the USA in the all-time Women’s World Cup table standings. They’ve won the last two World Cup trophies and four of eight total. The USA had their first three-game losing streak since 1993 last year, but they’ve won every match they’ve played in 2023. They’ve also conceded just one goal in eight matches this year.

Vietnam Thrown into the Fire

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 32
  • Next Match: July 27th vs. Portugal

Vietnam may not have a Women’s professional league, but they did manage to qualify for their first-ever World Cup. They did it by qualifying for the knockout stage at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time. Vietnam lost to China in the quarterfinals, which put them in the qualifying playoff. They defeated Thailand 2-0 and Chinese Taipei 2-1 there.

On their first Women’s World Cup schedule, Vietnam take on the USA, Portugal and the Netherlands. It’s just about as difficult of a group as Vietnam could get. Plus, they’ve lost their last three matches heading into the Women’s World Cup.

However, Vietnam have won the last four Southeast Asian Games gold medals. Huynh Nhu is Vietnam’s all-time leading scorer, with 67 goals in 103 appearances. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung is also a creative force in midfield.

Match Analysis & Odds

The USA enter the tournament at much better odds to win the title than Vietnam do to even pick up a point in this match. The USWNT are +250 favorites to win a third straight World Cup, while the USA vs Vietnam odds list Vietnam as +5000 moneyline underdogs. A draw in Vietnam’s first Women’s World Cup match also shows +2500.

In one of the most lopsided spreads you’re ever likely to see at a World Cup, the USWNT are six-goal favorites. USA -6 sits at -130 odds, and their biggest win this year is a 5-0 win over New Zealand. The USA are also -25000 moneyline favorites and a $100 bet returns just $0.40.

Vietnam +6 shows even odds and they recently lost 9-0 to Spain in a pre-World Cup friendly. Although Vietnam’s defense can be quite leaky, under 6.5 goals are priced at -125 odds for the match. Bettors shouldn’t forget that the USA opened up their 2019 World Cup campaign with a 13-0 win over Thailand.
