2023 NBA Summer League: Sacramento, Salt Lake City Hosting Events

Several Prized NBA Rookies Get First Taste of Pro Basketball

The 2023 NBA Summer League will be starting on Monday, but “league” might be stretching it just a bit. The California Classic will take place over two days, July 3 and 5, in Sacramento. The Salt Lake City Summer League is a three-day event. These two serve as a warm-up to the NBA 2K24 Summer League in Las Vegas, which is an 11-day event featuring entries from all 30 NBA teams.

Many players who were just drafted will be competing in Sacramento or Salt Lake City. There are several notable exceptions, such as San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama. While he won’t play in California, he is expected to play in Las Vegas. However, Brandon Miller, who was picked No. 2 overall by Charlotte, is slated to play for the Hornets in California, as are several others projected to be the basketball stars of tomorrow.

California Classic

Six teams will compete in the California Classic. Three games will be played on Monday and three games will take place on Wednesday. The event is hosted by the Sacramento Kings and is now in its fifth year. Fellow California teams Golden State and the Los Angeles Lakers will compete in the event. The Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Spurs will also be playing.

On Monday, the NBA schedules have the Heat meeting the Lakers at 3 p.m. ET, followed by the Spurs and Hornets at 5 p.m. The Warriors and Kings wrap-up the first day with a 7 p.m. game.

On Wednesday, the Warriors and Hornets meet at 3 p.m., with the Lakers taking on the Spurs at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, the Kings and Heat will battle it out in the late 7 p.m. contest to conclude the event.

The 2023 NBA Summer League will popular with NBA fans, who will get a chance to see the rookies they have been reading about in action. ESPN2 will broadcast all six games from California.

Salt Lake City Summer League

The Salt Lake City Summer League takes place Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The teams participating are the Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers and Oklahoma City Thunder. Each team plays the other three in a round-robin in this 2023 NBA Summer League event.

There are just two games a day in the Salt Lake City Summer League. As a result, the Jazz play the late game each day.

The Salt Lake City Summer League opens with Memphis and Philadelphia, followed by Oklahoma City and Utah. Wednesday has the Grizzlies and Thunder meeting in the 7 p.m. ET game. The 76ers play the Jazz at 9 p.m. The 76ers meet the Thunder on Thursday. Memphis and Utah meet in the final game of the event.

NBA TV will broadcast five the six games. ESPN2 will broadcast Thursday’s game between Philadelphia and Oklahoma City.

The Utah Jazz had three first-round picks in the NBA Draft. Therefore, all three – Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George and Brice Sensabaugh – should be in action here. The Jazz have a little added incentive to play their rookies. After all, they are the host team here. As a result, the arena should have a number of Jazz fans.

However, many people will be watching Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren. Holmgren was drafted No. 2 overall in 2022. But he missed the entire 2022 season with an injury. Although he did compete in last year’s summer league games. Oddly, the Thunder’s No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft isn’t on the roster. Although Cason Wallace should be added to the roster once the draft night trade between Dallas and Oklahoma City is made official
