The Stanford Cardinal pulled off one of the biggest surprises on the Week 7 college football slate, rallying from a 29-0 halftime deficit to stun the Colorado Buffaloes 46-43. The Cardinal scored on every possession of the second half and tied it with a 46-yard field goal as regulation expired before completing the stirring comeback in double overtime.
Junior receiver Elic Ayomanor was central to the Cardinal’s comeback, hauling in 13 catches for a school record 294 yards and three touchdowns from Ashton Daniels.
Let’s look at what made Ayomanor’s performance so special. Here’s a breakdown of Elic Ayomanor’s stats.
Putting on a Show
Elic Ayomanor’s stats were impossible to ignore. Ayomanor had touchdown catches of 97 and 60 yards in the second quarter. He added a 30-yard score in overtime, helping the Cardinal tie it 43-43 before Joshua Karty’s walk-off field goal from 31 yards.
Ayomanor notably dominated Colorado cornerback Travis Hunter, who’d returned after missing three games with a lacerated liver. Ayomanor leaped over Hunter for his final touchdown, pinning the football on the Colorado star’s helmet before hauling it in to complete the highlight-reel play. He proceeded to cap his unforgettable showing in style, mimicking Shedeur Sanders’ watch celebration as Stanford closed out its win.
Just how good was Ayomanor? He accounted for more than half of Stanford’s 523 total yards. For the season, the Canadian product now has 28 catches for 501 yards and four touchdowns.
Odds Outlook
Ayomanor’s historic performance didn’t do much to move the needle for the Heisman Trophy. The sophomore still isn’t on the odds board for college football’s most prestigious award, not that it’s any surprise. He entered Friday with modest NCAAF stats, just 207 yards.
The Cardinal have six NCAAF games remaining, including four against ranked opponents: No. 25 UCLA (Oct. 21), No. 5 Washington (Oct. 28), No. 12 Oregon State (Nov. 11), and No. 15 Notre Dame (Nov. 25). Those are potential showcase opportunities. Then again, it’s likely too late in the season for Ayomanor to jump into the race for the Heisman.
It also doesn’t help that Stanford is an afterthought in the college football standings. The Cardinals are 2-4 (3-3 against the spread), including 1-3 in Pac-12 play. Given the difficulty of their remaining NCAAF schedule, the Cardinal may have trouble reaching their projected regular-season win total of 4.0.
The Pac-12 remains the strongest conference in the country this season, with six NCAAF teams currently in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Led by Michael Penix Jr., a -140 Heisman favorite, No. 5 Washington is ahead of the pack at 7-0. Conversely, Stanford is the longest of long shots at +5000 per football odds. The Cardinal are likely headed for their third straight sub-.500 season.
