JJ McCarthy Stats: Michigan Quarterback in the Spotlight
Wolverines QB Enters Season as Undisputed No. 1

The JJ McCarthy stats were pretty solid last year for a guy who started last season entangled in a quarterback battle. McCarthy wasn’t Michigan’s starting quarterback until he solidified his grasp on the starter job with a huge first half against Hawaii. He was named Michigan’s starter for Week No. 3. McCarthy played well and became the team’s permanent starting quarterback.
McCarthy had a strong showing in the biggest game on Michigan’s NCAAF schedule, the game with Ohio State. He threw for 263 yards, three touchdowns and rushed for another score. The Wolverines won 45-23.
High School Career
McCarthy attended Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park, Illinois. When the Roadrunners canceled their 2020 season due to COVID, McCarthy transferred to IMG Academy in Florida. One of the top QB prospects in the country, McCarthy had already committed to Michigan. He had offers from more than 30 schools.
2021 Season
The JJ McCarthy stats don’t show a whole lot for his freshman season. He saw some action, completing 34 of 59 passes for 516 yards. McCarthy threw five touchdowns and was intercepted twice. It wasn’t much. But it was enough to earn him the chance to start in 2022.
2022 Season
This is the season where the JJ McCarthy stats really start to shine. He completed 208 of 322 passes for 2,719 yards and 22 TDs. He was intercepted just five times. Two of those came in the team’s playoff game against TCU.
McCarthy isn’t thought of as a running quarterback. But his college football stats on the ground aren’t all bad. He rushed for 306 yards and five touchdowns. Having a quarterback who can escape pressure is a huge luxury for college football teams.
McCarthy should be able to build upon his solid 2022 season heading into 2023. He has a bit more experience and is likely to have more confidence entering the season.
