Virginia Cavaliers 2023 Future Odds

Virginia Boasts Lowest Projected Win Total in ACC

Four years removed from a run to the Orange Bowl, the Virginia Cavaliers are expected to take another step back in 2023. The Cavaliers’ offense ranked bottom 10 nationally and lost its quarterback this past offseason, leaving head coach Tony Elliott to adjust on the fly.

Many prognosticators have the Cavaliers penciled to finish last in the ACC. Can they beat those odds? Read on as we assess the Virginia Cavaliers future odds in our NCAAF team preview.

Tough Season Ahead for Virginia

The Virginia Cavaliers are facing long odds in 2023 — literally and figuratively. On the heels of a 3-7 finish (1-6 in ACC play) in head coach Tony Elliott’s first season, the Cavaliers are expected to be a bottom-feeder in the ACC.

Virginia ranked 126th nationally in scoring last season, averaging 17 points per game. Overhauling the offense is a necessity. That job got more difficult when Brennan Armstrong, a three-year starter, transferred within the conference to NC State. Monmouth transfer Tony Muskett is the favorite to take over under center, though he’s a less proven option. Keep in mind, Armstrong was a 65.2% passer in 2021 before dropping to 54.7% last season.

Notably, the Cavaliers have just one bowl win since the 2005 Music City Bowl. They also haven’t been ranked since their Orange Bowl run in 2019. There’s a lot of history to overcome here, none of it particularly good. And that’s just the reality as Elliott looks to move on from a trying first season. More than likely, Virginia is going to find itself near the bottom of the ACC.

National Championship Odds: Better Luck Another Year

The Virginia Cavaliers future odds have remained steady at +50000. They’ve got an incredibly steep hill to climb, and that’s putting it mildly. For comparison’s sake, the Cavaliers were +25000 this time last year, per NCAA football odds.

Even if they beat expectations and contend for a bowl game, the Cavaliers are still nowhere near good enough to reach this level of supremacy in 2023. It’s just not possible. What’s the ceiling here? Six wins and a bowl game? Perhaps. There are just too many questions and too few answers at the moment.

Conference Odds: The Longest of Longshots

Virginia’s last AAC title was in 1995. Its next likely won’t be for a while longer. At +10000, the Cavaliers are the longest of longshots along with Virginia Tech, Boston College and Georgia Tech.

Clemson has won seven of the last eight ACC championships and is favored again, with odds of +150. Florida State is right behind the Tigers at +160. Both schools are likely to be in the Top 10 of the preseason college football rankings. At the moment, both are miles better than Virginia.

Regular Season Wins: Lowest Total in ACC Awaits Cavaliers

Virginia is projected for just 3.5 wins, with the Over juiced to +110. It’s the lowest total in the ACC.

That we’re even debating this speaks to how far the Cavaliers have fallen. Really, 3.5 wins? That shouldn’t be hard to top. Then again, Virginia was only 3-7 last year before its final two games were canceled.

There aren’t many gimmes on the NCAAF schedule. The Cavaliers will be tested right from the jump, against Tennessee Sept. 2 in Nashville. Tennessee is currently a 28-point favorite (-110) and -10000 to win outright, with Virginia priced +1900. The Cavaliers also get James Madison and Maryland before kicking off ACC play against NC State on Sept. 22.

Where are the wins? Boston College? William and Mary? Georgia Tech? Beyond those, things look bleak for the Cavaliers.

To Make Playoffs: Not Anytime Soon

There are no Virginia Cavaliers future odds available in this market. It’s no secret why. The Cavaliers are expected to finish near the bottom of the ACC, meaning they’ll be nowhere near a bowl game, let alone the College Football Playoff.
