The Toronto Maple Leafs are firing on all cylinders right now, winning nine of their last eleven games, they will look to add two more points to the standings on Saturday night as they take on a mid-range Washington Capitals club that has all of their attention focused on their superstar forward Alex Ovechkin and his record chase for the most goals in National Hockey League history.

The Maple Leafs did lose their last game, a tight 3-1 defeat against the New York Rangers on Thursday night. Winger Michael Bunting scored his seventh goal of the season, which was the only tally for Toronto. Goaltender Matt Murray, who had been playing very well after returning from injury, stopped just 17 out of the 19 Rangers shots he faced in the losing effort.

Look for former Washington netminder Ilya Samsonov to get the nod between the pipes in this game for the Leafs. The 25-year old Russian already beat his old club back when the season started on October 13th, making 24 saves on 26 shots faced in the 3-2 victory for the Caps.

The Washington Capitals are enthralled with the greatness and history taking place with their franchise superstar Alexander Ovechkin. “The Great Eight” as many call him, recorded his 30th career hat trick, giving him a team-leading 20 goals on the season but most importantly, the third period tally against a prone Petr Mrzaek for Chicago gave the 37-year old Moscow native his 800th career goal in the National Hockey League.

He is now only the third player in National Hockey League history to record 800 goals and is now one goal away from tying legendary forward Gordie Howe for second place and 95 goals away from the “Great One” Wayne Gretzky as the All-Time Goals leader in the league. As for the rest of the Caps, they chipped in alongside their captain in the 7-3 drubbing of the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night, and while the club had their five-game winning streak snapped on Thursday in a 2-1 defeat against the Dallas Stars, this Washington club still doesn’t look like a consistent group that can make a NHL playoff odds run.

Even with forward Tom Wilson set to return to the lineup in a few weeks after being out since the preseason with a lower body injury, this Capitals team only has a 5-8-1 record within the Eastern Conference this season and have looked slow and tired at times in games.
