After Eliminating Djokovic, Sinner Is Betting Favorite in Aussie Open Final

The Men's Australian Open Betting Odds Favor Jannik Sinner to Win First Grand Slam

Medvedev Will Be the Underdog For The First Time in 2024

Jannik Sinner made quite the statement as he punched his ticket into his first Grand Slam singles title with a win over 10-time champion Novak Djokovic. Now, the men’s Australian Open betting odds have Sinner as the favorite to beat Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final.

When Medvedev topped Sinner at the 2023 Rotterdam and Miami events, he improved to 6-0 in the head-to-head series.

Since then, Sinner has won the last three showdowns. They last met in the ATP Finals, with Sinner winning in three sets to advance to the title match.

Sinner’s Road to the Final

It was a pretty methodical march for Sinner on his way to his matchup with Djokovic in the semifinals.

Sinner didn’t drop a set in his first five matches, which is one reason why the men’s Australian Open betting odds have the 22-year-old Sinner as the favorite.

The first-seeded tennis player he saw was No. 26 Sebastian Baez in the third round, with Baez managing to take a total of four games from Sinner.

That was followed by more challenging matchups against No. 15 seed Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev, the No. 5 seed.

Rublev did extend Sinner to a second-set tiebreaker. That win set up one of the more anticipated matchups on the 2024 Australian Open schedule.

Sinner jumped all over the favored Djokovic to win the first two sets 6-1 and 6-2. Djokovic did make things interesting when he took the third-set tiebreaker. That only postponed the inevitable, with Sinner closing out Djokovic 6-3 in the fourth set to hand Djokovic his first loss at the Australian Open since 2018.

Medvedev’s Road to the Final

Medvedev lost three sets in his first two matches. He lost the first two sets to Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round and was pushed to a fourth-set tiebreaker. He lost just one point in the tiebreaker and rolled to a 6-0 win in the final set.

Medvedev won three challenging sets against Felix Auger-Aliassime, topped unseeded Nuno Borges in the Round of 16, and then had a battle against No. 9 seeded Hubert Hurkacz, winning 6-4 in the fifth set.

That set the stage for a memorable semifinal showdown with No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev.

With the crowd already buzzing after Djokovic’s loss, Medvedev lost the first two sets before winning a pair of tiebreakers to clinch a spot in his third Australian Open final by taking the fifth set 6-3.

Now, the men’s Australian Open betting odds have Medvedev listed as the underdog.

Last Meeting

Sinner ran his winning streak against Medvedev to three with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win in the semifinals of the ATP Finals in November. That came less than a month after his three-set victory in Vienna.

Sinner won three of his seven break-point opportunities in the match and only gave Medvedev two chances to break his serve.

Medvedev won just 36% of his second-serve points.

Sinner vs Medvedev Betting Preview

Five of the previous nine matches between Sinner and Medvedev went the distance. This will be the first Grand Slam meeting between the two.

Medvedev has been on the court for nearly one more hour per match in the Australian Open than Sinner.

Sinner has won 78% of his points on his first serve compared to 75% for Medvedev. The most significant difference has come on the second serve, with Sinner winning 60% of his points and Medvedev struggling a bit with a 48% success rate when he hits his second serve.

Sinner was priced at +600 to win the Australian Open when the tournament began. Medvedev’s odds were set at +900.

The game spread has been set at -4.5, with Sinner being the favorite, with the over/under on games played at 38.5.

It is fair to wonder how Sinner responds after the most memorable win of his tennis career. This feels like a match that could take a while, but with Sinner having the upper hand in recent matches, look for him to follow up the win over Djokovic by topping Medvedev to win his first career Grand Slam title.
