Rolling Back Into South Korea
Where’s the magic happening in 2023? The League of Legends World Championship is rolling back into South Korea this time! From October 10th to November 19th, teams from across the globe are jet-setting to the esports mecca for the most prestigious title in gaming.

This 2023 edition of Worlds is bringing some serious format shake-ups. We’re talking best-of-threes, a Swiss-style stage, and matches so nail-biting, they’ll have you chewing on your joystick. When the dust clears, eight teams will arise from the Swiss Stage, ready to throw down in a single-elimination showdown in Stage 3. It’s a gaming shake-up like no other happening at the heart of South Korea.
Format in Detail
In total, 22 teams from all corners of the world are stepping into the spotlight, each chasing glory and a slice of that mammoth prize pool. This format’s like a gaming marathon, with levels of epic battles leading to one heck of a grand finale. A very juicy LOL Worlds schedule this will be!
For Worlds 2023, 22 teams from professional leagues will be qualifying for the event. LPL and LCK will have 4 slots, while LEC and LCS will have 3 slots, PCS and VCS will have 2 slots, remaining slots will be one each for CBLOL, LJL, LLA and Worlds Qualifying Series.

2 from PCS (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Southeast Asia, and Oceania)
2 from Vietnam

1 from Worlds Qualifying Series
Stages of the Tourney
Stage 1 (Play-In)
- Eight teams are to participate: they are drawn into 2 double-elimination brackets (this draw happened at the end of the LEC 2023 Season Finals this past September 10th.)
- Matches are played out as the best of three
- Upper bracket winner of one of the groups will go head-to-head with the lower bracket winner of another group.
- These matches are played out as the best of five
- The Winners of these best of fives matches get to advance to Stage 2
Stage 2 (also known as Swiss)
- 16 teams are to participate: the 14 teams that got prequalified for Stage 2 plus the 2 qualifiers coming from Stage 1
- These are held in Swiss-style format using five rounds
- Matchups get drawn when each round finalizes
- Three is the magic number for teams: those with three wins get to advance to Stage 3, while those with three losses get immediately eliminated
- Matches for Qualification and Elimination are played as best of three; all other matches are played as best of one
Stage 3 (Knockout)
- Stage 2 provides eight qualifiers to take part
- There is a single-elimination bracket
- Matches are played as best of five
Prize Pool
The minimum guaranteed prize pool is of $ 2,225,000 USD; there is a percentage of the revenue captured from designated in-client sales that is yet to be added to this pool. The pool is then spread among the teams.
