CONCACAF Gold Cup: Guatemala vs Canada Odds

Guatemala Take Early Group D Lead

Canada Disappoint in Front of Home Fans

The first round of Gold Cup group stage matches certainly produced some surprises. USA needed a late equalizer to get a point vs. Jamaica. Meanwhile, El Salvador fell to Martinique and Canada only managed a 2-2 draw vs. Guadeloupe in Toronto. Now, Canada will go for their first win of the tournament when they take on Guatemala on Saturday. Guatemala picked up a 1-0 win over Cuba in their Gold Cup opener and a win will seal a knockout stage berth. We’ll see what La Bicolor’s chances are as we preview the Guatemala vs Canada odds.

Location: Shell Energy Stadium, Houston, USA

Head-to-Head

Canada enter this match on a four-game winning streak vs. Guatemala. They last played in a 2015 International friendly, which Canada won 1-0. On their winning streak vs. Guatemala, Canada have kept shutouts in each match. All-time, Les Rogues hold a 10-2-2 record vs. Guatemala. The last time punters could take the Gold Cup betting odds in this fixture was in 2007, when Canada got a 3-0 quarterfinal win.

Guatemala Substitute Makes Big Impact

    • Last Match: 1-0 W vs. Cuba
    • Standings: 1-0, 1st Group D
    • Next Match: July 4th vs. Guadeloupe

Guatemala’s opening fixture vs. Cuba started off well enough. However, striker Rubio Rubin went down with an apparent muscle injury just 11 minutes into the match. He was replaced by Darwin Lom up front, who had never before scored a CONCACAF Gold Cup goal.

When Guatemala won a penalty due to a VAR check, just before the first half ended, it looked like Lom would get his first Gold Cup goal. However, his shot struck the post and the match remained level.

Early in the second half, Lom made up for his penalty miss with a strike that found the bottom left corner. Guatemala were constantly on the front foot throughout the match and it helped that the Fort Lauderdale crowd was mostly made up of Guatemala fans. Guatemala outshout Cuba 17-6 in the match and held on for a 1-0 victory.

With Canada’s draw vs. Guadeloupe, Guatemala are in first place in Group D and in an excellent position. They need just one more win to qualify for the quarterfinal but the Guatemala vs Canada odds price Los Chapines as underdogs for Saturday’s match.

Canada Going For First Win

  • Last Match: 2-2 D vs. Guadeloupe
  • Standings: 0-1-0, T-2nd Group D
  • Next Match: Jul. 4th vs. Cuba

Canada entered their group stage opener vs. Guadeloupe as two-goal favorites. Plus, the Canadians were playing in front of their home fans in Toronto. Still, Guadeloupe were unfazed and put up a fight on Tuesday night. Thierry Ambrose scored in the 23rd minute for Guadeloupe with a brilliant piece of skill to beat defender Steven Vitoria.

Canada’s Lucas Cavallini equalized early in the second half as he finished off a masterful pass from Junior Hoilett. Les Rogues took the lead on a Guadeloupe own goal but it was a late Canada own goal that doomed them to a draw.

Jacen Russell-Rowe was on the field for just nine minutes for Canada and one of his few touches ended up in the back of his own net.

Now, Canada likely need results from both of their remaining matches on their CONCACAF Gold Cup 2023 schedule. They have won at least one match in each of their last three appearances in the Gold Cup.

As the pre-tournament Group D favorites, coach John Herdman will be expecting wins over Guatemala and Cuba to close out the group stage.
