England vs Colombia Head-to-Head
This will be the second-ever meeting between England and Colombia on their Women’s World Cup schedules. Back in 2015, England defeated Colombia 2-1 in the group stage.
England Advance Despite James Red Card
- FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 4
- Group Stage Standings: 3-0, 1st Group D
- Round of 16 Result: 0-0 D vs. Nigeria (4-2 PK W)
England looked vulnerable for the first time in the tournament when they took on Nigeria in the round of 16. In the first half, English-born Nigeria defender Ashleigh Plumptre hit the crossbar on a strike that could have put Nigeria ahead. England didn’t create many good chances and the match stayed scoreless deep into the second half.
In a mistake that could come back to haunt England, star player Lauren James stomped on a Nigeria player with just minutes to play. After a VAR review, James was sent off and will miss at least this match. Regardless, England managed to defeat Nigeria 4-2 on penalty kicks despite missing their first kick.
Now, England are in the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals for a sixth time. Even though James is out, England vs Colombia/Jamaica betting odds price England as the favorites for this one. Bettors should also keep an eye out on the status of midfielder Keira Walsh. She returned from an injury that saw her miss the game vs China but limped off in extra time vs Nigeria.
Colombia Win Knockout Stage Match for First Time
- FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 25
- Group Stage Standings: 2-1, 1st Group H
- Round of 16 Result: 1-0 W vs. Jamaica
Colombia, the 2022 Copa América Femenina runners-up, were surprise Group H winners. They opened their Women’s World Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over South Korea and followed it up with a massive upset win over Germany. Despite a 1-0 loss to Morocco in their group stage closer, Colombia finished ahead of Germany, who headed for an early exit.
In the round of 16, Colombia took on Jamaica and a well-taken goal from Catalina Usme was enough to seal the win. It was Colombia’s first-ever knockout stage win, which makes this quarterfinal uncharted territory.
At 25th in the World Cup team rankings, Colombia is the lowest-ranked team remaining. That should make them a popular rooting interest for neutral fans and they certainly shouldn’t be underestimated at this point. Usme and Linda Caicedo have been Colombia’s biggest threats offensively and have both scored two goals at the tournament.
On the defensive end, Colombia has conceded just twice in four matches and has looked quite organized. Notably, with just five goals scored in four matches, each quarterfinalist has scored at least three more goals than Colombia.
England vs Colombia Match Analysis & Odds
England enters the quarterfinals as the World Cup favorites, at +250 odds. Still, there are a couple of concerning signs about their performances at the Women’s World Cup. Other than their six-goal explosion vs China, England has scored just two goals in their other three matches. With Lauren James out, England will need other players to step up and score goals.
Regardless, England vs Colombia betting odds list the Lionesses as one-goal favorites. England has covered the spread in just one of their four matches so far but shows -110 ATS odds here. The Lionesses are also -190 moneyline favorites as Colombia comes in at +650 odds to pull off the upset in 90 minutes.
Colombia’s only loss of the tournament came by a one-goal margin and Colombia +1 displays -120 odds here. Although England and Colombia are the lowest-scoring teams remaining, over two goals show -125 odds.
A draw is priced at +275 odds and England have won two of their three previous extra-time matches in their World Cup history. England stands at -500 odds to advance to the semifinals for a third straight time. Meanwhile, Colombia are +350 underdogs to make the semifinals and continue their run.
