FIFA Women’s World Cup: Switzerland vs New Zealand Odds

Winner Advances to Round of 16

New Zealand Go For First Knockout Stage

History has already been made in FIFA Women’s World Cup Group A, and more could follow as Switzerland take on co-hosts New Zealand. By winning their opening match, New Zealand got their first-ever World Cup win. Then, the Philippines defeated New Zealand as they became the first 2023 World Cup debutant to win a match. Switzerland head into this match with a win and a draw as the winner will advance to the knockout stage. We’ll take a look at the Switzerland vs. New Zealand odds as the Football Ferns are going for their first round of 16.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

Switzerland vs New Zealand

Date, time:
Location: Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin, New Zealand

Head-to-Head

This is the first meeting between these two sides on their all-time World Cup schedules. This is also Switzerland’s first meeting vs. an OFC team at the Women’s World Cup. Meanwhile, New Zealand are 1-6 vs. UEFA teams in the Women’s World Cup.

Switzerland Yet to Concede

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 20
    • Last Match: 0-0 D vs. Norway
    • Standings: 1-1-0, 1st Group A

Norway had better chances than Switzerland in Tuesday’s matchday two contest but it didn’t matter. Swiss goalkeeper Gaelle Thulmann made some huge saves to keep a clean sheet. On the other end, Switzerland failed to score but still came away with a point in a scoreless draw. Now, Switzerland are just one point away from qualifying for the knockout stage.

They’re also one shutout away from completing the group stage without a single goal conceded. In a solid first matchday performance, Switzerland took down the Philippines, 2-0. A win vs. New Zealand will also mean Switzerland finish on top of Group A and will face the second-placed Group C team in the round of 16. Currently, the Switzerland vs. New Zealand odds list La Nati as favorites.

Switzerland have been a great choice for betting on soccer so far as they’re 2-0 against the spread. Their performance so far is a far cry from their showing at the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro. There, Switzerland conceded eight goals in three matches. Their defense deserves a lot of praise for their performances here. Other standouts are Ramona Bachmann, Lia Walti and Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic.

New Zealand Three Points From History

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 26
  • Last Match: 0-1 L vs. Philippines
  • Standings: 1-1, 2nd Group A

New Zealand defeated 12th-ranked Norway in their opener in front of their home fans. The Football Ferns made history by getting their first Women’s World Cup win in 16 World Cup games. Now, they’re one win away from making their first knockout stage appearance. They could have made things much easier in their second match, vs. the Philippines, but couldn’t get on the scoresheet.

The Football Ferns outshot the Philippines 16-4, but it didn’t matter as Sarina Bolden scored with the Philippines’ only shot on target. With the 1-0 victory, the Philippines became the first 2023 World Cup debutant to win a match at the tournament. It was also just the third time a host nation has lost a group stage match at the Women’s World Cup.

New Zealand’s inconsistency is undoubtedly frustrating for their fans, and they’ve had a rough year. They’ve won just two of the 11 matches they’ve played in 2023 and have been shut out eight times. Hannah Wilkinson scored New Zealand’s winner vs. Norway, but goals are often few and far between for the Football Ferns.

Match Analysis & Odds

With both teams needing a result, this could be one of the most entertaining matches of the group stage. Switzerland are expected to continue their strong play and enter the match and are 0.5-goal favorites. La Nati show +110 ATS and moneyline odds for Sunday’s match in Dunedin.

Again, Switzerland will win Group A with a win of any margin. In front of their home fans, New Zealand +0.5 displays -140 odds. While a draw would be sufficient for Switzerland, New Zealand have to be thinking about all three points.

Here, the Switzerland vs. New Zealand odds list a draw at +225 odds. New Zealand have struggled vs. European opposition in their Women’s World Cup history but did defeat Norway in the opener. New Zealand, despite playing at home, are +260 moneyline underdogs here. Both teams’ matches have been low-scoring so far and under 2.5 goals come in at -170 odds for this Group A closer.
