FIFA Women’s World Cup: Denmark vs China Odds

Odds Crucial Group D Opening Match

Denmark’s First World Cup Appearance Since 2007

Every time China has played at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, they’ve qualified for the knockout stage. This time, they find themselves in a difficult Group D with Denmark and England. Denmark, in their first Women’s World Cup since 2007, are looking to make some noise. We’ll run through the Denmark vs. China odds in what figures to be quite a competitive opening match.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

Denmark vs China

Date, time:
Location:HBF Park, Perth, Australia

Head-to-Head:

Denmark and China have met on their Women’s World Cup schedules three times before. In those matches, China won two meetings and the other finished in a draw. In the last decade, China and Denmark have gone head-to-head three times. Their 2014 Algarve Cup match finished 1-1 as China won in penalties. The other meetings were split by the two sides.

Knockout Stage or Bust for Denmark

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 13
    • Next Match: July 28th vs. England

Despite being ranked higher than China, Denmark were in pot three for the FIFA Women’s World Cup draw. So they’ll face a difficult road out of the group stage, with China, England and Haiti coming up. In last Summer’s UEFA Women’s European Championships Denmark also failed to get out of their group. They lost to both Germany and Spain, who are two of the top 10 teams in the world.

This time around, the Women’s World Cup odds give Denmark a +6600 shot to win their first Women’s World Cup. Unfortunately, appearances have been few and far between for the Red and White. They haven’t appeared at a World Cup for 16 years and have never made it past the quarterfinals. Still, there’s a lot of talent on the roster in Lars Sondergaard’s final tournament as head coach. Pernille Harder is certainly one to watch as Chelsea didn’t lose a single Women’s Super League game she played in this season.

The forward, who just joined Bayern Munich Women, has scored 70 goals in 141 appearances for Denmark. Along with Harder, there are plenty of Women’s Super League players. Rikke Sevecke, Nicoline Sorensen and Karen Holmgaard all play for Everton. The experienced midfielder Sanne Troelsgaard plays for Everton, Emma Snerle is on West Ham and Kathrine Kuhl is a rising star for Arsenal.

With all of this talent on the roster, and plenty more, the Denmark vs China odds price the Red and White as favorites. If they can grab all three points, they’ll be on a fast track to their first Women’s World Cup knockout stage appearance since 1995.

China Remarkably Consistent in World Cups

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 14
  • Next Match: July 28th vs. Haiti

The China Women’s National team has qualified for eight of nine FIFA Women’s World Cups. Each and every time they’ve appeared at the tournament, they’ve managed to advance out of the group stage. That also means they’ve picked up at least one win in their previous appearances. In 2019, China finished third in the Group B World Cup table standings but were one of the highest-ranked third placed teams.

So, they advanced to the round of 16, where they lost 2-0 to Italy. With an expanded World Cup format this time, third won’t be enough to make the knockout stage. Still, China certainly have a shot to extend their knockout stage streak. Last year, China won the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time since 2006 as striker Wang Shanshan and goalkeeper Zhu Yu starred.

Shanshan, China’s captain, is the leading active scorer at the time. She’s scored 58 times in 133 appearances for China. Up front, she may be paired with Wang Shuang, who plays in the USA with Racing Louisville. There’s a mix of experience and youth on this solid China side.

Match Analysis & Odds

Denmark have never beaten China in three previous World Cup meetings and have struggled to even qualify for major tournaments as of late. They were Women’s Euro finalists in 2017 under Nils Nielsen but haven’t reached the same heights under Lars Sondergaard.

The Red and White haven’t advanced out of the group stage at a major tournament under Sondergaard. Still, the Denmark vs. China odds list the Danes as one-goal favorites in this match. Denmark went on a four-game winning streak earlier this year, including victories over Norway, Uruguay, Sweden and Japan. Denmark -1 comes in at +110 odds, while China +1 shows -140 odds for this Group D opener.

Notably, China have lost their last two Women’s World Cup openers, but they were both by just one-goal margins. Underdogs China display +460 odds to win this match, while Denmark are -170 favorites to get just their fourth Women’s World Cup win in team history. A draw, which wouldn’t be the end of the world for either team, sits at +280 odds. In what’s expected to be a low-scoring match, under 2.5 goals are priced at -120 odds.
