European Champions Take on Les Grenadieres

England Among Top Teams in Tournament

England Women made a huge statement last year by winning the European Championship. Now, Sarina Wiegman’s side will try to win their first FIFA Women’s World Cup in an intriguing group. England will have to finish in the top two of a Group D which also includes China, Denmark and Haiti. The Lionesses take on Haiti, who are making their Women’s World Cup debut, in their opening match. We’ll preview the England vs. Haiti Odds for Saturday’s Group D game.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

England vs Haiti

Date, time:
Location: Suncorp Stadium, Milton, Australia

Head-to-Head

This will be Haiti’s first ever match vs. England. It will also be Haiti’s first-ever match at the FIFA Women’s World cup.

England Dangerous Despite Absences

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 4
    • Next Match: July 28th vs. Denmark

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about this England Women’s team but also some causes for concern. In the lead up to the tournament, England haven’t won any of their last four matches in 90 minutes. In fact, their last two pre-tournament friendlies finished in scoreless draws to Portugal and Canada.

It is, at the same time, impressive that England have conceded just five goals in seven matches this year. They have arguably the best goalkeeper in the women’s game, Mary Earps. In the Women’s Super League Earps kept 14 shutouts in 22 games this season. However, it will hurt not having captain and center back Leah Williamson to lead the defense.

Plus, UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 top scorer Beth Mead is also out of the squad with an injury, along with Fran Kirby. It is likely that Rachel Daly will play as England’s number nine. In 2019, England finished in first place in the Group D World Cup table standings, with three wins and no losses. In fact, they’ve won their last five group stage games heading into this match.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that the England vs. Haiti Odds price the Lionesses as heavy favorites for this one. Along with winning last Summer’s Euros, coach Sarina Wiegman reached the 2019 Women’s World Cup final and won the 2017 Women’s Euros as the coach of the Netherlands. So, England certainly have big game experience, even despite some key injuries.

Haiti Underdogs in Group D

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 53
  • Next Match: July 28th vs. China

Haiti are one of the lowest-ranked sides at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. At 53rd in the world, only Zambia, Morocco and South Africa are ranked lower than Haiti at Australia & New Zealand 2023. Still, Haiti did excellently to advance to their first-ever Women’s World Cup. In the intercontinental playoff semifinal, Haiti knocked off Senegal 4-0.

Then, Les Grenadiers pulled off an upset over Chile by a 2-1 scoreline. In their maiden campaign, Haiti have England, China and Denmark on their Women’s World Cup schedule. The vast majority of Haiti’s roster plays their club football in France. Some players have even excelled in the French top flight, especially the forwards.

Roselord Borgella, Batcheba Louis and Nérilia Mondésir are all ones to watch for Haiti in attacking areas. Mondesir was a top-ten scorer in the French league last season and created 29 chances. Defender Kethna Louis is also a key player but the biggest talent in Haitian women’s football is Melchie Dumornay.

Dumornay, a midfielder, spent two seasons with Reims before sealing a transfer to Lyon this Summer. She’s still only 19 and considered one of the best talents of her generation. Dumornay scored both goals vs. Chile to send Haiti through to their first World Cup and she can raise her profile even further here.

Match Analysis & Odds

England enter this match with just one loss since April 2021. In their last six matches vs. teams outside of the top-50 in the FIFA World Rankings, England have outscored their opponents 68-0. Still, this Haiti side figures to be much better than the likes of Latvia, North Macedonia and Luxembourg. Haiti are on the rise and have enough attacking talent to give England a couple of headaches.

Regardless, the England vs Haiti Odds list the Lionesses as four-goal favorites for this match. Both England -4 and Haiti +4 come in at -115 odds. Meanwhile, England are -5000 favorites to get a sixth-straight FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage win. Haiti would certainly take a draw in their first-ever WWC match and one displays +1800 odds.

If punters are thinking upset, they can take Les Grenadiers at +5000 odds. In last year’s UEFA Women’s Euro group stage, England scored 14 goals and conceded none. That included a resounding 8-0 win over Norway, who are ranked 12th in the world. Goals are certainly expected here, as over 4.5 sit at -130 odds. It’ll be interesting to see who can fill Beth Mead’s scoring void for England.
