Head-to-Head

This is Italy and Argentina’s first-ever meeting at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In fact, the only other head-to-head matchup between these sides finished in a 4-0 Italy win.

Azzurre in Back-to-Back World Cups for First Time

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 16
    • Next Match: July 29th vs. Sweden

Italy dominated in FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers. The Azzurre went 9-1 as they kept nine clean sheets and sealed automatic qualification. Now, Italy are in back-to-back Women’s World Cups for the first time in their history. Coach Milena Bertolini kept her job after Italy finished last in their group at last Summer’s European Championships but anything less than a knockout stage appearance here likely won’t be tolerated.

At the UEFA Women’s Euros 2022, Italy failed to win a match for the first time since 2005. They scored just twice and conceded seven times, but their competition was quite stiff. Regardless, the Italy vs Argentina odds price the Azzurre as favorites for this match. At the 2019 Women’s World Cup, Italy went 2-1 in the group and finished first in the World Cup group standings. They won a knockout stage match for the first time, as they downed China 2-0 in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinals, they fell 2-0 to eventual finalists Netherlands. This time around, Italy’s squad is mostly made up of AS Roma and Juventus players. AS Roma won their first Women’s Serie A title in 2022-23, and Manuela Giugliano and Valentina Giacinti figure to be key players for Italy as well. With a mix of youth and experience, Bertolini called up 16-year-old Giulia Dragoni and 33-year-old striker Cristiana Girelli.

Argentina Looking to Build on 2019 Performance

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 28
  • Next Match: July 27th vs. South Africa

In their FIFA Women’s World Cup history, Argentina have been outscored 37-5. They’ve never won a match at the Women’s World Cup, but they displayed signs of progress at the 2019 edition. Argentina managed to draw vs. both Scotland and Japan and lost to England 1-0. Three of their five Women’s World Cup goals also came at the tournament as La Albiceleste came back from 3-0 down to draw with Scotland, 3-3.

Argentina managed to qualify for consecutive World Cups by finishing in third place in the Women’s Copa America. They defeated Paraguay 3-1 in the third-place game as Yamila Rodriguez scored twice. Rodriguez was the leading scorer at the tournament, with six goals.

At Australia & New Zealand 2023, Argentina have Italy, South Africa and Sweden on their Women’s World Cup schedule. Argentina will see a golden opportunity to advance to their first knockout stage and won’t fear Italy or South Africa. Other players to watch on Argentina are midfielders Lorena Benitez and Daiana Falfan.

Match Analysis & Odds

Italy have lost just three of their previous nine knockout stage matches. The Azzurre have also won at least one match in each of their previous three World Cup appearances. In their 2023 opener, the Italy vs. Argentina odds list Italy as one-goal favorites. They show -110 odds to cover the spread and Argentina +1 comes in at -120 odds.

Argentina are priced at +415 moneyline odds to get their first-ever win in a Women’s World Cup. They’ve conceded 4.1 goals per game in their previous nine matches at the World Cup, which is the most of any team to make at least three appearances. That said, Italy are -190 moneyline favorites and a draw sits at +350 odds. Although, Argentina did concede just four goals in three matches in 2019.

Regardless, the oddsmakers price over 2.5 goals at -120 odds. Italy’s Aurora Galli, who scored three goals at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, is not in the squad. However, Cristiana Girelli, who scored a hat trick in 2019 vs. Jamaica, and Barbara Bonansea, who scored twice in 2019, are.
