Aces Seeking Bounceback Effort

From the start, the Las Vegas Aces have been the clear-cut best WNBA team. That’s not up for debate. But on Sunday, the Aces looked more mortal, losing 99-61 to the league’s other “Super Team,” the New York Liberty. The 38-point rout is the largest by a team with the WNBA’s best record.

Is there reason to be concerned? Not really. The Aces are still atop the WNBA standings at 24-3. Outside of New York (22-6) and the Connecticut Sun (20-7), nobody is particularly close to catching them, especially in the Western Conference. As such, Las Vegas has separated itself as a -275 favorite to defend its WNBA title, this after opening at +130.

Sunday’s performance notwithstanding, Las Vegas has been masterful offensively. The Aces, led by reigning MVP A’ja Wilson, Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray, are averaging 93.2 points per game. Furthermore, their plus-13.5 point differential is nearly double the next-best team, New York (plus-7.4).

The Liberty held Wilson to nine points on 2-of-14 shooting, one above her season low. Wilson briefly left the game and was checked for a concussion after taking an inadvertent elbow from New York’s Jonquel Jones. Though Wilson was ultimately cleared, her status is worth monitoring when assessing the Aces vs Wings betting odds. Wilson ranks fifth in the league in scoring (20.3), second in rebounding (9.4), and first in blocks (2.3) and is +120 to win her third MVP, trailing only New York’s Breanna Stewart (-160).

Concerns Piling up for Wings

The Dallas Wings (15-13) have lost four of their last six games, dropping them into a tie with the Atlanta Dream for fourth place. What’s particularly troubling is their defense, which has allowed 104 points in their last three losses. That includes a 104-91 defeat to Las Vegas on July 30, in which the Aces shot 50% from the field, including 13-of-25 on 3-point attempts.

On top of that, star guard Arike Ogunbowale, the WNBA’s fourth-leading scorer at 21.1 points per game, may face disciplinary action from the league after she was ejected from Sunday’s 104-96 loss to the Chicago Sky for making unnecessary contact with an official. Afterward, Ogunbowale was adamant that she did not intentionally bump the official, telling reporters, “That was the worst call I have ever seen in my life.” Her status has the potential to swing the Aces vs Wings betting odds.

Forward Satou Sabally has blossomed into a superstar alongside Ogunbowale. The No. 2 overall pick in 2020, Sabally is averaging 17.9 points and ranks fifth in the WNBA in both rebounding (8.9) and steals (1.6), per WNBA stats. The Wings currently own the fourth-best title odds, though they remain a +2000 longshot.

Handicapping the Game

Can Dallas fix its defensive woes? If not, it could be a long night for the Wings. The Wings have already beaten Las Vegas once at home, 80-78 on July 7, but their play of late is concerning. Even without seven-time All-Star Candace Parker, who is sidelined indefinitely after surgery on her broken foot, the Aces have myriad scoring options. They’re averaging 90.3 points in three games against Dallas this season, two of them wins.

Dallas could challenge Las Vegas in the paint, particularly with the 6-foot-7 Teaira McCowan and 6-4 Sabally. The Aces were doubled up on the boards, 48-24, by New York. That’s where the Aces might end up missing Parker.

Despite those questions, Las Vegas is the better team far and away. And it will have plenty to prove after a humbling defeat. The Aces should be comfortably favored, even on the road.
