Milwaukee Bucks Still the Team to Beat
Despite the incredible start to the season by last seasons NBA Finalists from Boston, the Milwaukee Bucks have quietly gone about restoring themselves as the top team in the East.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has been at his absolute best in the early parts of the season and has garnered plenty of early media support as the MVP frontrunner. The Greek Freak is averaging 31.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists on the season – all the while averaging just 33 minutes a night.
Aside from his obvious offensive output it’s the fact he is performing at as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate as well that has him in his own tier at the moment. He’s also had to do most of this without his sidekick, Khris Middleton.
Middleton is again listed as doubtful for this one, which may not be a huge blow given how the team has performed with him on the floor. The Bucks are -9.2 points per 100 possessions worse when Middleton has been on the floor this season, with opponents shooting 4.4% higher from the floor.
While the team will ultimately be better with him in the long-run the teething pains of trying to find his feet and rhythm are certainly playing a part in holding them back.
Brooklyn Nets Need to Hold Their Ground
The Nets have had little trouble beating up on lesser talent, thanks in large to an offense that is performing at its highest level.
Over the past month, Brooklyn ranks 1st in effective field goal percentage, 1st in points per 100 possessions and they are 2nd in point differential during their 13-3 run. As impressive as they’ve been, they have beaten just three teams with a winning record in that time – Atlanta, who were missing John Collins and Dejounte Murray, Portland, who were without Damian Lillard, and Memphis, who were without Ja Morant and Desmond Bane.
To say the team needs a statement win to solidify their status as a genuine threat in the East is an understatement and doing so against the Bucks here would be their most impressive scalp of the season.
Brooklyn are one of the most undersized teams in the league and dealing with Giannis and Brook Lopez proved too much for them in their early season meeting that saw the Bucks run out 110-99 winners.
The concern is whether their interior defense can hold up against the size and strength that the Bucks possess. Brooklyn are one of the most undersized teams in the league and dealing with Giannis and Brook Lopez proved too much for them in their early season meeting that saw the Bucks run out 110-99 winners.
The Bucks shot 77.8% at the rim in that game and were allowed to secure 31% of their missed shots on the offensive glass. A similar result in this NBA match up will almost certainly be too much to overcome and stopping Milwaukee inside has to be the point of emphasis for them in this one.
If you’re betting the NBA against the spread tonight, this game will undoubtedly be of the highest interest – but don’t expect too much in the way of fireworks. Look for both teams to put their best defensive effort forward and that should lend itself to plenty of empty possessions that keep this game Under the full game total.
