Hurricanes Thriving In Low-Scoring Affairs

With a veteran team that knows how to play together, the Carolina Hurricanes know how to close out games.

In recent action, the Hurricanes are among the best teams in the NHL in tight-checking games and that is something to consider when looking at the Hurricanes vs Stars odds as the total has gone under in five of Carolina’s last six games.

With Sebastian Aho’s overtime goal lifting Carolina to the 1-0 win over the visiting New Jersey Devils on Saturday, the Hurricanes have improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight games that had six or fewer combined goals scored.

Beginning with a 3-2 win at Toronto on Dec. 30, Carolina is 5-1-1 in its last seven games decided by one goal. It is a far cry from the 1-4-3 stretch in one-goal games from Nov. 30-Dec. 21 when looking at the NHL scores during that stretch.

The total has gone over in eight of the last 11 games Carolina has played against NHL teams from the Western Conference.

Stars Starting to Shine

While Winnipeg led the Central Division for a long stretch earlier in the season and Colorado came into the season as the team to beat in the division, it is Dallas that has made the biggest move in recent weeks.

Among Western Conference teams, only Colorado has averaged more goals per game since the start of January than the Stars.

Veterans Matthew Duchene (17 points in 17 games) and Tyler Seguin (eight goals) have led the way, and the youngsters have gotten involved as well.

The 24-year-old Jason Robertson has 16 points and a +10 defensive rating, 22-year-old defenseman Thomas Harley has 13 points in 17 games with a pair of game-winning goals while Wyatt Johnston, a 20-year-old center, has six goals, six assists, and a plus/minute rating of +7. That could factor into the Hurricanes vs Stars odds.

Four of the last six games for Dallas went over the total.

Last Meeting Hurricanes vs Stars

Martin Necas scored in overtime to lift the visiting Hurricanes to the 3-2 win as the game fell under the six-goal total as both teams failed to score on the power play.

It was the third straight matchup between Dallas and Carolina to finish as a one-goal game and just two of the last nine meetings were decided by more than one goal.

Hurricanes vs Stars Betting Preview

Four of the last six games between the Hurricanes and Stars finished over the total. However, the last two meetings in Dallas went under.

Dallas is 31-16-5 this season as the betting favorite while Carolina has lost three of its five games when listed as the underdog.

The Stars have covered in only seven of 26 home games compared to a 9-15 record against the spread on the road for the Hurricanes.

Dallas has seen 21 of 26 home games finish over the total.
The Stars are one of six Western Conference teams with at least twice as many wins as losses at home.

Eight of the last 12 times that Carolina played at Dallas, the game landed over the total. The total is currently at 6.5 for this NHL matchup even though Carolina defenseman Brett Pesce and forward Andrei Svechnikov are both questionable to play. Svechnikov appears on the verge of returning to the lineup.

The Hurricanes have won five straight road games.

This game could come down to which team plays at its pace. Dallas would like a more wide-open style of play with Carolina very comfortable in a matchup with limited scoring chances.

Even though Carolina has been getting the results in recent home games, it is hard to pick against a healthy Dallas team playing at home.
