Serie A: AS Roma vs Atalanta Betting Preview

Two of Serie A’s Best Collide

Unbeaten Atalanta Head to Rome

Two teams who could be in the Serie A title race this season meet on Sunday as AS Roma host Atalanta. It’s still early on but both teams are in the top five heading into Matchday 7. Roma’s form has been a bit uneven in recent weeks but Atalanta remains unbeaten. This is certainly La Dea’s toughest road match of the season so far. So, we’ll review their odds to keep their unbeaten streak in this AS Roma vs Atalanta betting preview.

Ligue 1 – Roma vs. Atalanta Game Info:

  • Location: Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy
  • Date & Time:
  • TV: CBS Sports, Paramount+

Head-to-Head

AS Roma defeated Atalanta twice last season and outscored them 5-1. Roma’s Tammy Abraham scored three of those goals and Atalanta had no answer for him. Roma is unbeaten in the last three meetings but Atalanta won the previous three before that. Last season’s meeting at the Stadio Olimpico finished 1-0 to Roma as Abraham scored the winner.

Roma Bitten by Injury Bug

  • Last Serie A Match: 2-1 W at Empoli
  • Injuries and Suspensions: D Marash Kumbulla (Out), M Stephan El Shaarawy (Out), M Giorginio Wijnaldum (Out), M Ebrima Darboe (Out), M Nicola Zalewski (Out)

AS Roma betting tips have suggested taking the Giallorossi at home this season. So far, Jose Mourinho’s side is 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico and only lost there three times all of last season. Roma defeated HJK 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday as striker Andrea Belotti scored his first goal for the club. With Belotti and Paulo Dybala in addition to Tammy Abraham, Roma is a more dangerous offensive team this season.

There have been some slip-ups in recent weeks, though. Last Thursday, Roma lost to Bulgarian side Ludogorets 2-1 in their Europa League opener. Udinese also destroyed the Giallorossi 4-0 on Serie A Matchday 5. More consistency will be key for Roma as they push for a top-four finish this season. However, Roma has a bunch of players out due to injury which is thinning their midfield. Nicolo Zaniolo is back but Nicola Zalewski, Ebrima Darboe, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Stephan El Shaarawy are all out for the time being.

Should Roma defeat Atalanta on Sunday, it will be the first time this season they manage three wins in a row in all competitions. Since signing on a free transfer from Juventus, Dybala has been a high-impact player. The Argentine has four goals and two assists in all competitions and is a focal point of Roma’s attack. He and Tammy Abraham, who scored 17 goals last season. have formed an exciting duo and are worth monitoring.

Atalanta Thriving on Defense

  • Last Serie A Match: 1-1 D vs. Cremonese
  • Injuries and Suspensions: D Berat Djimsiti (Out), F Duvan Zapata (Out)

Perhaps no UEFA competition this season has been a blessing in disguise for Atalanta. With just Serie A to focus on, they’ve had the league’s best defense through five matches. Atalanta has conceded just three goals in six matches and hasn’t yet conceded multiple goals in a game. After spending time on loan with Cremonese in 2021-22, center-back Caleb Okoli has slotted into the Atalanta defense nicely.

A win last Sunday would have kept Atalanta on top of the Serie A table. However, they drew 1-1 with newly promoted Cremonese on Matchday 6. The real test will be during the next few weeks, as Atalanta’s Serie A schedule gets progressively tougher. After Roma, they face Fiorentina, Udinese, Sassuolo, and Lazio, which are all teams vying for European berths.

Atalanta was hovering around the top four for the majority of the 2021-22 season but imploded in the home stretch and finished eighth. Gian Piero Gasperini is now tasked with getting Atalanta back to the Champions League and so far, so good. Our AS Roma vs. Atalanta betting preview notes that La Dea managed the feat in three straight seasons from 2018-19 to 2020-21.

So, the expectations are high and Atalanta sits pretty in second place right now. With Duvan Zapata out, though, the forwards haven’t scored much. Luis Muriel and Rasmus Hojland have combined for just one goal so far this season, which is a concern.

Odds & Preview

Hosts AS Roma are +115 favorites heading into Sunday’s match. Jose Mourinho’s side hasn’t lost any of their last 15 matches at the Stadio Olimpico dating back to January. Atalanta sits at +245 odds to win at Roma for the first time since 2019. The final result has been a draw in three of the last ten meetings. A draw shows +250 odds, which corresponds to around a 28.5 percent implied probability.

Our AS Roma vs. Atalanta betting preview highlights the fact that Atalanta has conceded to Roma in five consecutive Serie A meetings. Look back further and you’ll find that Roma has scored in 12 of the last 13. Roma has scored seven goals in three home matches in all competitions this season, so it’d certainly be surprising if they don’t get on the board. Of Note: Roma under 1½ goals is priced at -130 odds.

Notably, the visitors are -135 favorites to cover the ½-goal spread and manage a win or draw. Incredibly, Atalanta has lost just once in their last eight matches vs. Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. Despite both teams being tipped to score one goal or fewer, over 2½ goals for the match sits at -120 odds. Six of the last ten head-to-head meetings have had three or more goals scored but Atalanta’s defense has looked formidable. Regardless, this should be one of the best weekend matches in any league.
