ATP Basel Betting Odds: With top seeds slumping, Hurkacz could be a player to watch

Can American Taylor Fritz Reclaim His Form and Make a Deep Run at Swiss Indoors Event?

Top Contenders Rune and Ruud Struggling for Wins Heading Into Basel Tourney

The ATP tour stop in Basel suffered a loss before the draw was pulled with the withdrawal of former World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. The ATP Basel betting odds will feature Holger Rune among the top contenders.

Rune, who is fourth in the ATP rankings, is joined by fellow top-10 players Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz in the 32-player field.

Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Yannick Noah, Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras and Novak Djokovic are among the former champions. The most successful player in the Swiss Indoor event is Basel native Roger Federer, a 10-time men’s singles champion.

After no event was held in 2020 and 2021 due to the global pandemic, Felix Auger-Aliassime won the 2022 title over Rune.

The 32-player field begins on Monday, with the championship match set for Oct. 29. Along with the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria, it is the final event before the last ATP 1000 event of 2023, which is held in Paris.

The next Grand Slam tournament is the Australian Open in January, Rune (+1800) comes in eighth in the current Australian Open outrights, with Ruud tied for ninth at +2000.

Let’s take a look at some players to keep an eye on when the tournament gets underway in Basel.

Ruud, Rune Look To Punch Ticket to Turin

Why are so many top-10 players participating in ATP 500 events in Austria and Switzerland? The fact that just four of the eight spots for the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, are up for grabs might have something to do with it.

Rune and Ruud are sixth and eighth in the ATP rankings, with American Taylor Fritz in 10th. In the singles race, Rune is eighth, Fritz is ninth, and Ruud comes in at No. 10.

The 20-year-old Rune is coached by former Basel champion Boris Becker. He didn’t help his chances of getting into the field in Turin with a loss to No. 122 Brandon Nakashima in Shanghai. Since reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, he lost six of his next seven matches. Keep that in mind when it comes to the ATP Basel betting odds.

Ruud is also trying to rediscover his form. Since getting to the title match in Bastad, Sweden, he has last four matches to players outside the top 50.

Alex de Minaur, Hubert Hurkacz, Jan-Lennard Struff, and Nicolas Jarry are other players on the entry list to keep an eye on.

Hurkacz soared from 17th to 11th in the ATP rankings after winning the ATP 1000 event in Shanghai. After eliminating American Sebastian Korda in the semifinals, Hurkacz edged Andrey Rublev in a third-set tiebreaker to win the title. It was his third top-10 win of 2023.

Since winning the first set against Daniil Medvedev at the US Open, it has been a rough stretch for de Minaur. The Australian, who reached the 2019 singles final in Basel, fell to No. 91 Fabian Marozsan in his first match in Shanghai. He just lost to Aslan Karatsev in the quarterfinals in Tokyo.

Any Americans Ready to Break Through?

The last time a U.S.-born player got to the finals at the Basel event came in 1998 when Andre Agassi fell to Tim Henman in four sets back when best-of-five-set matches were still utilized.

The 1996 champion, Pete Sampras is the last American to win the tournament.

Fritz is the top American hope regarding the ATP Basel betting odds. He is coming off an upset loss to Shintaro Mochizuki in Tokyo despite winning the first set 6-0. That followed a loss to No. 130 Diego Schwartzman in the Round of 32 in Shanghai as he faced an uphill battle to land a spot in the ATP Finals.

Fritz had a strong showing during the North American hard-court season as he won the title in Atlanta, reached the semifinals in Washington, got to the quarterfinals in Cincinnati and made it to the quarterfinals again at the US Open.

Sebastian Korda and Christopher Eubanks are other Americans in the field.

Korda had wins over Medvedev, Francisco Cerundolo and Ben Shelton before being eliminated by Hurkacz in the semifinals at the ATP 1000 event in Shanghai. He opened some eyes with a run to the Australian Open quarterfinals in January.

Eubanks made quite the splash at Wimbledon with a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the quarterfinals before falling in five sets to Medvedev. Both of those ATP scores put Eubanks in the spotlight.

Tour Missing Swiss Stars

After years of seeing Federer and Stan Wawrinka making their presence felt on the ATP tour, tough times appear to be ahead for Switzerland’s top men’s tennis players.

With Federer retiring, the 38-year-old Wawrinka is the highest ranking player from Switzerland and is in danger of falling out of the top 50.

The 21-year-old Dominic Stricker is the only player from Switzerland ranked in the top 100, and he comes in at No. 90.

Wawrinka is a two-time semifinalist in Basel, and he reached the quarterfinals on four other occasions. When looking at the tennis scores, he upset third-ranked Casper Ruud in the first round in the 2022 Swiss Indoors tournament on his way to the quarterfinals.

The last time there wasn’t a player from Switzerland reaching at least the quarterfinals in Basel was 2005. Federer reached the next 10 finals and won seven championships in his hometown during that stretch.
