ATP China Open Odds: Alcaraz, Medvedev on Rematch Collision Course?

Six-Time China Open Champion Novak Djokovic Only Top-10 Player Not Entered in China Open

No American Men’s Player Has Won the China Open Since 2008

After the last three China Opens were called off due to the global pandemic, some of the biggest hitters in men’s tennis are heading to Beijing for the ATP 500 event. When looking at the ATP China Open Odds, Carlos Alcaraz is set to play for the first time since a semifinal loss to Daniil Medvedev at the US Open.

Among the contenders, Alexander Zverev is currently playing in the Chengdu Open and needed three sets to advance in each of his first two matches.

Since the tournament achieved ATP 500 status in 2009, Novak Djokovic has won six of the 11 titles. However, he is not entered in the tournament.

The draw is set to be set on Tuesday for the 32-player field that will have no first-round byes.

The next Grand Slam tournament is the Australian Open in January. Djokovic is the front-runner at +125 followed by Alcaraz at +225 and Daniil Medvedev at +450. Rafael Nadal, who was sidelined for most of 2023, comes in at +1400 in the Australian Open men’s outrights.

Alcaraz Ready to Shake the Rust Off

Alcaraz lost just one set at the US Open before falling to Medvedev in four sets to prevent another showdown with Djokovic. Now he is ready to get back on the court and continue preparations for the ATP finals.

Now No. 2 in the ATP rankings, Alcaraz wouldn’t meet Medvedev until the title match in Beijing.

With nine top-10 players and 17 of the top 20 in the field, this could be a challenging return to tour for Alcaraz so keep that in mind when it comes to the ATP China Open odds.

He won his next tournament following the French Open, but in his first event following Wimbledon, Alcaraz fell to American Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals in Toronto.

There are some interesting tennis betting odds associated with Alcaraz as he is priced at -120 to come up empty in terms of Grand Slam singles titles in 2024. The odds are at +250 for him to win one major, +450 to take a pair of the Grand Slams, followed by +900 odds to capture three of the four Grand Slams and +2000 to win all four majors.

A Look At the Other Top Contenders

Medvedev got the best of Alcaraz in the last meeting so it remains to be seen if history repeats if they make it to the final and what the ATP China Open Odds will look like if the top two seeds reach the final.

Alcaraz and Medvedev are firmly entrenched at No. 2 and 3 in the current rankings.

Things get interesting with not much separating No. 4 Holger Rune, No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 6 Andrey Rublev and No. 7 Jannik Sinner.

They are all in this tournament so perhaps there will be some movement in the rankings.

A Look At The American Hopes

Taylor Fritz is the lone American set to be seeded in the top eight in the tournament.

However, Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul are also in the field. Tiafoe just teamed with Ben Shelton to clinch the title at the Laver Cup for Team World.

Fritz and Tiafoe won singles matches at the Laver Cup as well. No American has won this tournament since Andy Roddick topped Dudi Sela in the 2008 final.

A History Lesson

The last time the China Open was held, the semifinals featured the top four seeds with top-seeded Dominic Thiem outlasting No. 4 seed Karen Khachanov in three sets and No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas winning 7-6, 6-4 against Alexander Zverev.

Thiem won 6-1 in the third set to win the title. He is not entered in this year’s tournament.

Three of the top eight seeds lost in the first round in 2019.

Seven of the last eight China Opens saw the championship match end in straight sets.

What’s Up Next?

When looking at the tennis schedule, the China Open and the 28-player Astana Open will be precursors to the 96-player Shanghai Masters tournament, also in China.

The only other ATP 1000 event before the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy will be Paris Masters that begins on Oct. 30.
