2023 Cymbiotika San Diego Open: Jabeur the Favorite in 2023 U.S. Event Finals

Top Americans Coco Gauff and Madison Keys Are Among Players to Pull Out of San Diego Event

Sakkari and Garcia Look to Rebound After First-Round Exits at US Open

Things are going to wind down a bit after Coco Gauff won the US Open women’s singles title. The next U.S. stop on the WTA tour comes in San Diego with top-seeded Ons Jabeur the favorite in the 2023 Cymbiotika San Diego Open. There will be just one more U.S.-based event left on the WTA tour for the rest of 2023 after a new champion is crowned in San Diego.

Jabeur is one of three top-10 ranked players in the field in San Diego with the top four seeds receiving byes into the second round in the 28-player singles draw.

Gauff, US Open semifinalist Madison Keys, former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and Donna Vekic have withdrawn from the tournament, which is not unusual the week following a Grand Slam event.

Iga Swiatek, who just fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in the WTA rankings, won last year’s tournament in San Diego. She is not entered in this year’s event.

The main draw begins on Monday with six singles and three doubles matches.

Jabeur Looks to Bounce Back

Jabeur could not follow up a run to the Wimbledon finals with similar results at the US Open as she fell in straight sets to Qinwen Zheng in the fourth round in New York. When it comes to the WTA scores, it was one of the many surprises at the US Open.

Jabeur, who fell from No. 5 to No. 7 in the WTA rankings, won her lone title in 2023 on U.S. soil when she failed to drop a set on her way to winning the clay-court event in Charleston, South Carolina in April.

Jabeur did not play in San Diego in 2022. She is priced at +400 to win the tournament according to the 2023 Cymbiotika San Diego Open odds.

Back on the Court

Caroline Garcia and Maria Sakkari should both be well rested heading into the 2023 Cymbiotika San Diego Open after they both fell in the first round at the US Open.

Garcia, the No. 7 seed, lost to qualifier Yafan Wang while Sakkari, the No. 8 seed, fell to Spain’s Rebeka Masarova. Making matters worse is that the players who pulled off the first-round upsets both lost their next matches.

Since reaching the finals at the WTA 500 event in Washington, DC, Sakkari has lost three of her four matches.

Garcia is 2-6 in her last eight matches.

Garcia is the No. 2 seed in San Diego and will face either American Sloane Stephens or Elise Mertens in the second round.

Sakkari could draw Jabeur in the semifinals.

Sakkari fell from eighth to ninth in the rankings with Garcia dropping three spots to No. 10.

Sakkari and Garcia both lost in the first round in the 2022 San Diego tournament.

Barbora Krejcikova is the other player to receive a first-round bye after receiving a wild card into the tournament.

Sakkari (+900) is the No. 2 choice in the San Diego outrights with Garcia coming in at +1100. Krejcikova, Belinda Bencic and Jelena Ostapenko all have +1000 championship odds.

A Look At U.S. Hopes

Even without Gauff or Keys in the field, there are some U.S.-born players in the 2023 Cymbiotika San Diego Open field.

Stephens and Danielle Collins are in the bottom half of the bracket. Both of them would likely have to contend with seeded WTA players before a possible matchup in the third round.

Sofia Kenin and Katie Volynets also received wild cards and join Alycia Parks in the top half of the bracket.

If Parks wins her opening match, she will draw top-seeded Jabeur. Parks will face Anastasia Potapova in the first singles match on Monday.

Kenin will face sixth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova in the first round. Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Emma Navarro and Louisa Chirico played their way through the qualifying draw to earn spots in the main draw. Four other Americans fell in the final round of qualifying.

Collins (+1400) has the best title odds among the U.S. players with Kenin and Stephens both currently at +2000.

Collins joined Jessica Pegula as the Americans to reach the semifinals in the 2022 San Diego Open before both dropped three-set matches.

Five of the top six seeds reached the quarterfinals in last year’s event as it remains to be seen if history repeats this week.
