ATP and WTA Grand Slam Winners Circle

2022 Australian Open

Australia waited 44 years to embrace a home-grown champion as Ashleigh Barty ended the almost four-and-a-half decade long drought by claiming the 2022 Australian Open women’s singles title.

The 25-year-old Aussie and then consensus World No. 1 defeated surprise American finalist Danielle Collins, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in 87 minutes to claim her third career major title.

Unfortunately, for Australian tennis and the women’s game in its entirety, Barty retired soon thereafter, breaking the field wide open for the next tennis major on the calendar.

The men’s game welcomed a familiar champion to its fold Down Under, Rafael Nadal. The veteran Spaniard, then 35 years of age, defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in an epic, five-set marathon, storming back from two-sets down, 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, to win the title.

At the time, it marked the second Australian Open title for Nadal and a record 21st career Grand Slam title, moving him ahead of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic (both tied at 20 in January, 2022).

2022 French Open

Iga Swiatek claimed her sixth straight title of the season and second career Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in stellar fashion, dismantling American teenager Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in 68 minutes. It was the culmination of an incredible 35-match winning run by the Polish star and newly-minted World No. 1, a run that began in February, with her first title of the season in Doha, and continued through to June, with titles won in Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and Paris.

Nadal won his second straight major of 2022, 14th overall French Open title and a record-setting 22nd career Grand Slam title on his beloved clay at Roland Garros. The 36-year-old Spaniard put on a clinic as he defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0

Ironically, despite a career long domination of the French Open, Nadal wasn’t the bookmakers’ favorite going into the tournament as we look back on the tennis odds for this Tennis Betting Recap 2022.

The top favorite according to the market was Novak Djokovic, priced at +200 or thereabouts depending on your choice of sportsbook. Teen phenom Carlos Alcaraz was the next best bet, priced at +225, while Nadal, along with 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas, were both priced at +400 at the tennis betting exchange.

2022 Wimbledon Championships

With a ban on Russian players in place, the Wimbledon Championships presented a unique opportunity for players in both fields to capitalize. That proved to be exactly the case for the women’s game, indeed, in a historical Wimbledon final.

Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina stunned the world of tennis by claiming the coveted title at the All England Club. She defeated Tunisian trailblazer Ons Jabeur in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win her maiden major title.

Both Rybakina and Jabeur were making their first-ever appearance at a major final, as well as history for their respective countries. Rybakina became the first woman or man from Kazakhstan to join an illustrious champions circle on the game’s biggest stage and most storied Grand Slam of the calendar year. Jabeur became the first African and Arab woman or man to reach a major final.

Joining Rybakina on the traditional Wimbledon board was Djokovic, who claimed his seventh Wimbledon title and 21st career Grand Slam title, pulling him one behind record-holder, Nadal.

Djokovic defeated first-time finalist Nick Kyrgios in four sets. 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3), coming through as the odds-on favorite to win as we look back on the betting online markets for this Tennis Betting Recap 2022.

2022 US Open

World No.1 Swiatek emerged as the predicted 2022 US Open champion, coming through on her favorable tennis odds to win the tournament. The 21-year-old Pole took the 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Jabeur, who was making her second-straight final appearance of the year.

On the men’s front, a new star of the game was born on Arthur Ashe stadium, as Carlos Alcaraz claimed his maiden Grand Slam title with a four-set victory over Norway’s No. 1 Ruud, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, (1), 6-3.

The 19-year-old’s path to the 2022 US Open final wasn’t straight forward, He played three straight five-setters, including back-to-back epics against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals and Francis Tiafoe in the semifinals, the former of which was the second-longest match in the history of the US Open with the latest finishing time.
