How Did Coco Gauff and Sabalenka Secure a Spot in the US Open Final?

Gauff Trumps Muchova and Sabalenka Barely Beats Keys

Gauff Defeats 10th Seed Muchova

Coco Gauff faced an unexpected challenge in her bid for the first-ever US Open final matchup, but she emerged victorious. Gauff displayed her tennis prowess, defeating the 10th seed, Karolina Muchova, with a score of 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals. The match, however, featured a 50-minute delay due to a protest in the Arthur Ashe Stadium stands.

Just as Gauff was setting the pace in the second set, chaos erupted. Disruptive shouts echoed from the upper stands of the 23,000-plus capacity Arthur Ashe Stadium. Demonstrators, a frequent presence at 2023 Grand Slam tennis matches, were causing a brief delay due to protesting. When play failed to resume after 15 minutes, the players left the court.

‘No Fossil Fuels’ Protester Delay

It was eventually revealed that one protester had glued their bare feet to the cement stands, causing the unexpected holdup.

The protester, wearing a No Fossil Fuels shirt, had to be extricated by the police. After the protester was removed, play resumed, with Gauff leading 1-0 in the second set and on her way to the US Open final matchup.

Gauff Takes Control

Under the bright lights and warm 85-degree weather at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Gauff, seeded sixth, stormed onto the court. She swiftly broke two of Muchova’s initial three serves, holding a commanding 5-1 lead. Though Muchova managed a break to stay alive at 5-4, Gauff seized the moment. With Muchova serving, Gauff took a commanding 40-0 lead, securing the first set 6-4.

Gauff quickly took a 1-0 lead in the second set. Still, Muchova managed to rally and tie the set at 5-5. However, Gauff’s determination shone through. In a dramatic game final, Gauff held her lead and seized the opportunity, winning on her fifth match point and securing her place in the US Open final matchup.

With this impressive victory, Gauff is now set to face the 2nd seed, Aryna Sabalenka, on Saturday. This marks her second appearance in a Grand Slam final after her 2022 French Open journey. At just 19 years old, she’s the youngest American finalist at the US Open final matchup since Serena Williams’ debut victory in 1999.

Sabalenka’s Epic Comeback to Secure Spot in US Open Final

Aryna Sabalenka, on the other hand, pulled off a stunning comeback from the brink of defeat against American 17th seed Madison Keys. Sabalenka fought her way to a thrilling victory, winning 0-6, 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (10/5) in a nail-biting third-set tie-break. This triumph secured her place in her second-ever Grand Slam final.

After a challenging start that saw her trailing 0-6 in the first set, Sabalenka displayed incredible resilience. Madison Keys had a chance to serve for the match in the second set, but Sabalenka mounted a spectacular comeback. Her determination shone through as she won the second-set tie-break convincingly with a score of 7-1.

Keys’ Disappointment

Madison Keys, who had come agonizingly close to reaching her second Grand Slam final, expressed her disappointment after the match. “I think everyone at the start of the tournament would obviously be really, really excited to be in the semis. Right now it sucks,” Keys admitted. However, she remains optimistic about the future and sees this experience as a stepping stone.

The Upcoming US Open Final Clash

Aryna Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, will now set her sights on her second Grand Slam title. She’s slated to face the 19-year-old American sensation, Coco Gauff, in the US Open final. Although Gauff holds a 3-2 advantage in their head-to-head matchups, this will be their first encounter in a major tournament.
