Thirty Runs In Last Two Games For New York

The Yankees’ offense hasn’t been the most consistent in the MLB. However, if you began watching baseball on Saturday, you’d have no clue. Since Saturday, the Yankees have scored 30 runs in the last 18 innings. Those 30 runs helped them earn a series win over the Brewers and likely have them feeling good heading into Baltimore.

Jackson Holliday’s 1-for-30 Start To MLB Career

The Orioles and their fanbase were stoked to see Jackson Holliday play in the Majors. The former No. 1 overall pick was absolutely slugging in AAA and got the call to make his MLB debut. Since his MLB debut, he’s gone 1-for-30 in an Orioles uniform. Because of his slow start, he was sent back down to Triple-A.

Holliday is still a top prospect and is expected to be one of the best players in the MLB eventually. It’s just going to take him time to develop. The same thing happened to Mike Trout, for example.

Game 1

Monday, 6:35 pm ET
Clarke Schmidt vs Grayson Rodriguez

The Yankees will roll with Clarke Schmidt in Game 1 of the series. Schmidt is a righty who has allowed a .208 ISO and wOBA of .403 to his first 59 righties. This wasn’t always the case. Last year, he was way worse against lefties, allowing a .197 ISO and wOBA of .381 to 344 lefties.

Essentially, both sides of the plate can attack Schmidt, who has lucked out with his 3.55 ERA to begin the season.

The projected lineup for the Orioles has hit a .175 ISO and wOBA of .321. Since last season, Gunnar Henderson has looked terrific against righties, hitting a .285 ISO and wOBA of .382. He’ll anchor this Orioles group, which also has four other players hitting a high ISO and wOBA against righties since last year.

Meanwhile, Grayson Rodriguez will pitch in Game 1 for the Orioles. He’s a righty with high strikeouts and low walks. However, despite being a right-handed pitcher, he’s watched his first 65 righties hit a .271 ISO and wOBA of .406.

These stats were the opposite last year, like Schmidt’s. But while Rodriguez has been inconsistent, he’s been better with higher strikeouts and has greater overall talent than Schmidt.

Against righties, the Yankees’ projected lineup has hit a .177 ISO and wOBA of .320 since last season. The group has struck out under 22% of the time and has earned nearly 10% of walks. However, only Juan Soto and Aaron Judge have stood out analytically on paper against righties since last year.

We’d grab the Orioles in Game 1 at home (-120) to begin our Yankees vs Orioles series preview.

Game 2

Tuesday, 6:35 pm ET
Nestor Cortes vs Dean Kremer

It’ll be Nestor Cortes for the second game of the series. The left-handed thrower has only struck out 22.2% of batters, but he’s still allowed just a .139 ISO and wOBA of .273 to 144 batters this year. Cortes has even kept walks down to 3.2%. The lefty won’t get many ground balls and will give up mostly fly balls. But he keeps them in the yard.

Cortes will face Dean Kremer of the Orioles. Kremer has struck out close to 24% of batters but has still allowed a .206 ISO. He gives up power but doesn’t give many free passes or put many guys on base. His wOBA is still currently at .293, thanks to just 14.8% of line drives allowed and only 5.3% of walks.

While the Yankees don’t consistently hit righties, the Orioles have better numbers overall against lefties. Adley Rutschman, Ryan O’Hearn, Ryan Mountcastle, Anthony Santander, and the MLB ROY odds-on favorite in Colton Cowser have all hit lefties well since last season.

Back the Orioles in Game 2.

Game 3

Wednesday, 6:35 pm ET
Luis Gil vs Corbin Burnes

New York will keep giving Luis Gil chances. Gil has walked 17.6% of batters this season but still only has a 4.01 ERA to begin the season.

It’s due to his high strikeout rate of 32.4% and his ISO and wOBA numbers, which are above the average, at .128 ISO and .286 wOBA this season. If Gil can fix his control issues, he’d be a solid rotation guy for the Yankees. But until then, it’s hard to trust him.

It’s also especially tough to trust Gil, knowing he’s facing Baltimore ace Corbin Burnes. Burnes is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA. He’s also held teams to a .147 ISO and wOBA of .258 to begin the year, including 25.4% of strikeouts and only 5.8% of walks.

Against righties, the Orioles have better numbers and certainly have the most accomplished pitcher on the mound. Per our Yankees vs. Orioles series preview, Baltimore looks better on paper in Game 3.

Game 4

Thursday, 1:05 pm ET
Carlos Rodon vs Cole Irvin

It’ll likely be a lefty-lefty battle in the series’s final game. Carlos Rodon is expected to get the ball in the finale. He’s only struck out 19.3% of batters and has walked 11.3%. Despite those subpar numbers, Rodon has a 2.48 ERA with a .121 ISO and a wOBA of .302. He’s allowed just 23.1% of fly balls, which has ultimately helped him limit damage.

Although the Yankees don’t consistently hit righties, there’s way more potential against lefties. The projected lineup has hit a .187 ISO and wOBA of .342 against lefties while only striking out 19.8% of the time.

Rodon will probably take on fellow lefty Cole Irvin. Irvin isn’t penciled into the rotation now, but it looks like John Means will return the day after Irvin starts for the Orioles. Irvin has added only 14.1% of strikeouts and has given up a .335 wOBA to his first 92 batters faced. But he’s struggled way more against righties. Guys like Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe, Greybar Torres, and Giancarlo Stanton have solid power to knock Irvin around and salvage the series with a win.

The Yankees scored some big MLB scores over the weekend, but they’ll probably quiet down against the Orioles.
