Aaron Judge Stats: Yankees Slugger Headed to 10-Day IL

Reigning AL MVP to Miss Time With Ligament Sprain in Right Toe

Aaron Judge’s stats put him among baseball’s elite hitters. Unfortunately, the New York Yankees will have to do without the four-time American League All-Star for at least the next week on the MLB schedule due to injury. Following Tuesday’s loss to the White Sox, the Yankees announced that Judge is expected to land on the 10-day Injured List with a contusion and ligament sprain in his right big toe.

Judge was hurt while crashing into the right-field fence at Dodgers Stadium on Saturday. It’s the second IL stint this season for the reigning AL MVP, who missed time last month with a hip ailment.

What type of impact will Judge’s absence have on the Yankees (36-26), who are third in the AL East, 7.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays? And what will it do to his MVP candidacy? To help answer those questions, let’s examine Aaron Judge’s stats.

Power Central

With 19 home runs in 49 games, Aaron Judge remains one of baseball’s preeminent sluggers. It’s close to his pace from last season when he hit an American League-record 62 homers.

Judge is currently second in the majors in home runs behind Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who has 22 in 61 games. Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy is right behind Judge with 18, followed by Matt Olson and Jorge Soler with 17 apiece. Yordan Alvarez, Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber each have 16.

His .674 slugging percentage leads baseball, as does his 1.078 OPS.

Aside from Judge, the Yankees’ biggest power threat is first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who has 11 homers. As a team, New York is fourth in homers with 96, trailing the Rays (105), Dodgers (103) and Braves (98).

Elite Run Production

Judge is on track to drive in 100-plus runs for the second straight season and third time in his career. He has 40 RBI, putting him in a tie for 17th with Braves catcher Sean Murphy. Alvarez is currently the leader with 53 RBI, ahead of Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia (52) and Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien (50).

Judge had been especially hot of late, with 14 RBI over his last 15 games. He homered eight times during that stretch, amassing an .868 slugging percentage.

His career-high for RBI is 131, set last season. That surpassed his previous mark of 114 from 2017, his first full season in the majors.

Better Than ‘Average’

Judge isn’t just an all-or-nothing hitter. Far from it, in fact. Judge is batting .291 in 175 at-bats, slightly above his career average of .284. That average leads the Yankees (Rizzo is second at .289) and is 22nd-best in baseball, tied with Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. On top of that, Judge has drawn 35 walks, giving him a top 10 on-base percentage (.404).

Judge hit .311 in 2022, the first time in eight seasons he finished above .300.

What are the Odds?

Judge is putting together another tremendous season. Still, oddsmakers are a bit leery about his chances of winning a second straight MVP award. He currently has the second-best MVP odds at +500. However, that pales in comparison to Ohtani, who’s an MLB odds favorite at -146.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s odds of winning the East have jumped to -270. Behind them are the Yankees at +460.
