Figueroa Favored in Battle Between Former Champs

They may both be without belts at the moment, but boxing fans know that the winner between Brandon Figueroa and Mark Magsayo may go on to dominate the 126-pound division. The Figueroa vs Magsayo betting odds favor the former (-270), who has gotten his feet wet in this division. Magsayo fights for the first time since losing to Rey Vargas in a hard-fought decision.

Figueroa Could Be the Next Featherweight King

Known as “The Heartbreaker”, Figueroa Figueroa has the makings of becoming boxing’s next big star. His nickname is a testament to his good looks and boxing prowess. With a 78 percent knockout-to-win ratio, Figueroa is the type to overwhelm his opponents with his sheer volume. He gave Stephen Fulton the fight of his life though that loss showed some of his weaknesses.

The 26-year-old is still a tad too hittable and it’s how Fulton beat him: he leaves himself when he goes in to throw combinations. And with how often Figueroa marches forward and attacks, it will give his opponents plenty of chances to punch him right back. But that’s still easier said than done as Figueroa’s speed, power, and precision, make it hard to pull off unscathed.

Already a former champion at super bantamweight, Figueroa wanted to avenge his only loss to Fulton. But the latter opted to box Naoya Inoue. Either way, Figueroa has a wealth of options from fighting Rey Vargas and then the winner of Fulton-Inoue. The other champions in the division are also possibilities.

“I just have to keep improving, keep fighting these top-level fighters, and keep winning. That’s my main goal,” Figueroa told Boxing Junkie. “I know me and Mark will make another great fight. “And if everything goes according to plan, I’ll fight Rey Vargas or whoever wants to fight and go from there.”

Indeed, if he proves the Figueroa vs Magsayo betting odds correct, Figueroa will be a new big dog in a division with the likes of Vargas and Mauricio Lara. Be it here or a division down or up, Figueroa is just getting started. But first, he’ll need to turn Magsayo back.

All or Nothing Bout for Magsayo

Magsayo could just steal Figueroa’s thunder should he beat him here. The Figueroa vs Magsayo betting oddsmay not be on his side, but it can only magnify the achievement. The Filipino just could not get past Vargas who was just a little bit too long and difficult for him. Figueroa is also lanky and will have a height and reach advantage over Magsayo albeit he fights much differently.

“I need stamina and a jab and more combinations that can affect his style. I need to be smart in this fight,” said Magsayo. “I can punch Figueroa easily. If he gets hit hard he’s going to feel it, then I think he’s gonna run.”

Figueroa is an offensive boxer unlike Vargas and Gary Russell Jr., the man Magsayo outpointed to win the title. This can play more to Magsayo’s style as he is the heavier-handed of the two. His opponent knocks boxers out by breaking them until the referee or their corner has to save them. But Magsayo can flatten opponents with his power.

That’s the main reason why the best boxing odds don’t have Magsayo longer than +215. “Power is the great equalizer” as they say and Magsayo may land fewer punches but cause more damage. Still, with the total expected to go over 10.5 rounds (-165), Magsayo will need to do more than punch Figueroa cleanly.

Magsayo will need to go all out and make sure he demolishes Figueroa. His opponent has the speed and reach advantage and can pile up stats at a faster rate. Those betting on boxing should hope Magsayo does not get caught trying to outthink his opponent. Go in there and punch him as he says he will.
