CFL Week 3 Odds Preview: It Could Get Wild in The West

Three of Four CFL Games Take Place in West Division

Bombers and Argonauts Both Favored Largely

Two weeks into the CFL and last year’s finalists, Winnipeg and Toronto, have picked up where they left off. Impressive wins in Week 2 have the two clubs as the largest favorites per the CFL Week 3 odds. They both play in the Western parts of Canada while Saskatchewan-Calgary makes it three out of four games beginning this Thursday.

CFL Week 2 Review: Favorites Sweep on Both Ends

If you love underdogs in the CFL, Week 2 was not your week. All four favorites won and covered their spreads last week. In fact, all of them won by 11 or more points. No game was close as Calgary and Winnipeg both won as visitors while BC and Toronto held it down at home.

Thanks to these dominant performances, three of the four winners return as favorites on the CFL Week 3 odds. The only team that doesn’t is BC, which visits Winnipeg as underdogs. And as far as the totals went, it split 2-2.

The bad beat of the week belonged to the ‘over’ bettors for the Hamilton-Toronto game. The total was set 46.5 and the game concluded with a 32-14 Argonauts victory for a total of 46. A rouge would have cashed the over. Alas, it went under against recent betting trends when these rivals meet.

BC Lions (2-0) vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-0)

Date, time:
Location: IG Field, Winnipeg
Streaming: CBS Sports Network, CFL+

For the second straight year, the CFL schedule pits undefeated Western powers in BC and Winnipeg to determine the sheriff of the wild west. As Winnipeg dominated last year, the CFL Week 3 odds expect it to do so again as six-point favorites. Winnipeg has won and covered in five straight home games versus BC. And thanks to both of their prolific offenses, the total is set at 49, which is the highest of this early 2023 season thus far.

Montreal Alouettes (1-0) vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-2)

Date, time:
Location: Tim Hortons Field, Hamilton

Bo Levi Mitchell being banged up for Hamilton may be a blessing in disguise. Matthew Shiltz acquitted himself well in relief last week. He faces his old team, Montreal, which is 2-3 in its last five games coming off a bye. The odds are slightly in favor of Montreal (-1.5) with the total set at 44, the lowest of the week, partly due to these teams’ rather new offenses. Set in Hamilton, this is the week’s only game on the East coast.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-1) vs Calgary Stampeders (1-1)

Date, time:
Location: McMahon Stadium, Calgary

If Winnipeg and BC are battling for the top spot in the West, Saskatchewan and Calgary face off to be the next best. The line initially opened at -5.5 for Calgary but the public has favored Saskatchewan with the line now down to -3.5. That’s a bold play as the Roughriders are 0-5 against the spread (ATS) in its last five games. Calgary, however, is just 4-2 ATS in its last six games hosting Saskatchewan.

Toronto Argonauts (1-0) vs Edmonton Elks (0-2)

Date, time:
Location: The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton

Chad Kelly and the champions got it done in their 2023 debut. The quarterback scored a hattrick with three rushing touchdowns as Toronto also forced three turnovers from Hamilton. The team consistently put up big plays and have not lost any swagger from its Grey Cup victory. Now, they take on the worst team in the CFL standings in Edmonton. Toronto is favored to hand Edmonton its 19th straight home loss as the biggest favorites (-6.5) this week.
