Three points could go a long way toward getting Dortmund to the knockout stage. They were in last place in the Group F Champions League standings prior to the 1-0 road win over Newcastle a few weeks ago. Now, they’re in the thick of the knockout stage race but are still two points behind first-placed PSG.
Concerningly, Dortmund have conceded seven goals in their last two Bundesliga games heading into UCL Matchday 4. That could force Edin Terzic to change up the Nico Schlotterbeck and Mats Hummels center-back partnership. After all, he does have former Bayern center-back Niklas Sule to call on. Newcastle and Arsenal played in an incredibly fiery match on Saturday. Both Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes could have been sent off in the first half alone. In what was a dogfight, neither team was at their best. Newcastle did find an incredibly controversial breakthrough in the 64th minute through Anthony Gordon. A lengthy VAR check, which looked at the ball potentially going out of bounds, a foul on an Arsenal player, and an offside, couldn’t find conclusive evidence to overturn any of them.
Perhaps lucky to come away with all three points, the Newcastle United standings show that the Magpies are in sixth place in the Premier League and in third place in Champions League Group F. A win on Tuesday would see Newcastle go above Dortmund in the standings, at the very least.
Newcastle did create chances in their last matchup vs. Borussia Dortmund and were a bit unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet. Eddie Howe does have a lot of injuries to contend with here as well as all of Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, and Harvey Barnes are set to miss out. Regardless, Newcastle have conceded just three goals in their last five matches, in all competitions.

The Borussia Dortmund vs Newcastle lines are certainly intriguing. Dortmund are +160 underdogs despite playing at home on Tuesday. They’ve made the knockout stage in four of their last five UCL appearances but things would get complicated should they lose. Visitors Newcastle are +155 favorites for this one and Eddie Howe’s side is in good form, especially defensively.
Bettors can take both Dortmund pk and Newcastle pk at -110 odds for what could be Tuesday’s most competitive match. A draw sits at +265 odds and neither team would be too upset with coming away with a point. Newcastle like to make things physical and if they can get Dortmund into a dogfight, anything is possible.
