EPL: Brighton vs Newcastle Odds
Both Sides Coming off Losses
Upstart EPL Teams Face Off
Brighton and Newcastle were two of the biggest surprises in the Premier League last season. The Seagulls finished in sixth place and qualified for the Europa League for the first time in their history.
Meanwhile, Newcastle pipped Liverpool to fourth place and will return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
When the two sides face off on Saturday in Brighton it should be an exciting affair. We’ll take a look at the Brighton vs Newcastle odds as both sides look to bounce back from losses.
Brighton vs Newcastle Head-to-Head
On last season’s EPL schedule, Newcastle managed to go unbeaten vs. Brighton. They played to a scoreless draw at the AMEX last season, while the Magpies managed a 4-1 win at home.
Newcastle are unbeaten in the last four meetings but have never beaten Brighton away in the Premier League. Brighton have won two of the previous EPL head-to-head matchups at the AMEX, while the other four have finished in draws.
Brighton Lose for First Time in 2023-24
Brighton lost at their own game last Saturday, as West Ham put on a masterclass of counter attacking football. Brighton dominated possession and had more chances to score in the match but it simply didn’t matter.
West Ham, who had just 22 percent of the ball, went up 3-0 in the match from opportunistic counter attacks and fine finishes from James Ward-Prowse, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio.
The Seagulls got a goal back through Pascal Gross but it was too little too late. Brighton fell for the first time this season and now stand at 2-1. Brighton do rank first in the EPL stats, with nine goals in three games, but are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
All three of their games have finished with four or more goals and more shootouts are to be expected. Coach Roberto de Zerbi’s preferred style of play should mean that both Brighton and their opponents get a bunch of chances this season.
Unfortunately, one of Brighton’s biggest young talents, Julio Enciso, will be out for an unspecified amount of time with a knee injury.
That should mean more opportunities for fellow teenage striker Evan Ferguson and Joao Pedro. Even with the injury blow, the Brighton vs Newcastle odds list the Seagulls as slight favorites for this match.
Newcastle Blow Lead Despite Man Advantage
Newcastle’s match vs. Liverpool last Sunday started off quite auspiciously. Anthony Gordon pounced on a Trent Alexander-Arnold error to give the Magpies a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Three minutes later, Liverpool defender and captain Virgil van Dijk earned a red card for denying Alexander Isak a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The Magpies didn’t make the most of their man advantage despite some good chances. Liverpool’s Alisson made one of the best saves you’re likely to see this season on a thundering strike from Miguel Almiron.
Almiron also hit the post in the second half and Darwin Nunez made Newcastle pay. The substitute striker scored a brace to give Liverpool an unlikely win at St James’ Park, given the circumstances.
With the loss, Newcastle dropped to 1-2 and are now in 13th place in the EPL standings. Newcastle’s early season schedule has been unforgiving, with matches vs. Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and now Brighton.
Since Newcastle destroyed Aston Villa 5-1 in their opener, they’ve scored just one goal in the last two matches. Their front three of Almiron, Isak and Gordon is certainly dangerous, though.
Punters should expect all of Emil Krafth, Joe Willock and Sven Botman to be out for Newcastle on Saturday. Botman is an especially big loss in the center of defense and Jamaal Lascelles figures to replace him.
