EPL: Newcastle vs Liverpool Betting Preview

Reds Head to St James’ Park

Two of EPL’s Best Face-Off

Newcastle’s St. James’ Park is known as one of the hardest places to play in the Premier League. Last season, only Liverpool and Arsenal managed to win there, and Liverpool returned to Newcastle on Sunday. Our Newcastle vs Liverpool betting preview will cover the latest team news, injuries, suspensions, and odds for this blockbuster EPL match. Both teams will compete for the Champions League places in the EPL standings this season. Perhaps, they’ll even be title contenders. Either way, we’ll look at the match of the week in the Premier League.

NEW Newcastle vs Liverpool LIV

Day/Time:
Location: St. James’ Park, Newcastle, England

Head-to-Head:

Newcastle can’t seem to get over the hump vs. Liverpool. Last season, Liverpool managed a 2-1 comeback win over the Magpies at Anfield and a 2-0 victory at St. James’ Park. The Reds are unbeaten in the last 13 meetings between these two teams on the Premier League schedule. Newcastle’s last win in this fixture came in 2015, and they’ve lost each of the last four.

Newcastle Going for Bounce Back

Newcastle United has emerged as one of the best teams in the Premier League in short order. Eddie Howe’s Magpies have made St James’ Park a fortress over the last couple of seasons. They lost just two matches there in 2022-23 and won their Premier League home opener over Aston Villa, 5-1. Newcastle overpowered Villa as Alexander Isak scored twice, and Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali scored debut goals.

The Magpies’ second match of the season was quite a difficult one. They went on the road to defending Premier League champions Manchester City and lost 1-0. There’s no shame in losing to City, especially at the Etihad, and Newcastle will look to bounce back come Sunday. They may be without Joelinton, who left the pitch early vs. Manchester City with an injury. Newcastle vs Liverpool betting previews note that Joelinton has been one of Newcastle’s most important players over the last few seasons.

If he cannot suit up, Sean Longstaff figures to start in midfield for the Magpies. In the match vs. Man City, defender Tino Livramento also made his debut, and he is a promising prospect. Newcastle’s team is well-rounded, as they have multiple solid players in each position. That’s especially true of their strikers, which include Isak and Callum Wilson. While Isak has been starting as of late, Wilson finished second in the 2022-23 Premier League stats with 0.86 goals per 90 minutes.

Liverpool Win Despite Red Card

Liverpool opened up the 2023-24 season on the road at Chelsea and managed to come away with a 1-1 draw. In their second match, they hosted Bournemouth at Anfield and blew the Cherries away, even with a man down for most of the second half. Antoine Semenyo opened up the scoring for Bournemouth in the third minute but Luis Diaz equalized from a Diogo Jota assist in the 28th.

Mohamed Salah got his own rebound on a penalty to score in the 36th minute. So, Liverpool went into the half up 2-1, but Alexis Mac Allister got a straight red on a studs-up tackle in the 58th minute. Just a few minutes later, Jota doubled Liverpool’s lead as they came away with a 3-1 win. Mac Allister, who Liverpool signed from Brighton earlier this Summer, will miss the next three matches due to suspension.

Wataru Endo, who Liverpool just signed from Stuttgart, can take Mac Allister’s place in the meantime. Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are currently dealing with injuries. While Alcantara figures to be out for a while, Alexander-Arnold and Jones are questionable for Sunday’s game.

Match Analysis & Odds

Even though Newcastle is on a long winless streak in this fixture, our Newcastle vs Liverpool betting preview notes the Magpies are favorites for this match. In a match where anything could happen, Newcastle is the +120 moneyline favorite, while Liverpool are the +190 underdogs. Meanwhile, a draw shows +290 odds for Sunday’s match.

With Joelinton potentially out for Newcastle and Alexis Mac Allister suspended for Liverpool, both midfielders will be slightly weakened. Liverpool’s potential midfield trio of Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Cody Gakpo have never started together so it’ll be interesting to see how they might get on. Newcastle at pk, -0.5 displays -110 odds here, while Liverpool, pk, +0.5 stands at the same price.

The last three meetings at St James’ Park have only averaged one goal per game. Betting on under 3, 3.5 at -110 odds certainly doesn’t look like a bad bet. Newcastle and Liverpool both have some of the best defenses in the league and two of the best goalkeepers. For Liverpool to come up to Newcastle and win, they’ll need to remain organized and disciplined at the back. Newcastle will want to avoid having this one become a track meet as well and Liverpool’s attackers can run riot under the right circumstances. Still, these two sides were two of the highest-scoring ones in the Premier League last season. In any case, this is one of the best matches in any league this weekend.
