Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. fight for the IBF and IBO lightweight titles on Saturday in Australia. The Loma vs Kambosos odds have the Ukrainian at -700 to win. However, fighting in front of his home crowd could spur on Kambosos, who has a value of +450 chance.
It’s an intriguing fight on the boxing schedule, and the winner with reinvigorate his career.
Dissecting Loma’s Record
The 36-year-old was beaten by Devin Haney last year, and Haney has since lost to Ryan Garcia. However, Garcia seemingly failed a drug test, so the form through Haney could stack up better than it looks.
Lomachenko is 17-3 and hasn’t been overly active throughout his career. That’s the big detractor when taking the -700 price, and we would have liked to have seen more from him.
He scored unanimous decision victories over Richard Commey and Jamaine Ortiz before his loss to Haney. It’s hard to be inspired by that form, despite what boxing odds might suggest.
Loma said he could be done with boxing in the next year, and he also stated why he picked to fight Kambosos and not Tim Tszyu.
“It’s George Kambosos,” Lomachenko said. “And it’s not a hard (choice). It’s the numbers. That’s it.
“George has been an undefeated world champion, he’s had the four titles … he is a true warrior who is always trying to win his fights. That’s good for boxing.”
The -700 favorite could be criticized for dodging Tszyu, which makes us reluctant to take the price with Loma vs Kambosos odds. He’s a risky bet in the title fight at RAC Arena in Perth.
No Haney Means No Problem
Kambosos has only ever been beaten by Haney, so he shouldn’t be too worried about the challenge facing him in Lomachenko. The feisty Australian is a proud boxer, and he rebounded from consecutive losses with a win over Maxi Hughes.
The majority decision victory was hard fought, and we don’t think he deserves to be the +450 underdog, especially fighting at home. That’s often overlooked with a boxing bet, and Australians love to put on a good show in front of their home fans.
Kambosos is a good enough fighter to compete for the titles, having won the IBF, WBA, and WBO titles when beating Teofimo Lopez in 2021. Lopez seemingly had a lot of excuses, but take nothing away from the 30-year-old, who also pushed Haney to his limits.
Fellow Australian boxer Jai Opetaia believes the willpower of Kambosos Jr could be enough.
“I used to watch Lomachenko, I used to think he was an absolute freak. But Kambosos has that will-to-win, he wants it bad. It’s hard to beat someone who wants it that bad. I believe he can pull it off, so I’ll be backing Kambosos all the way,” Opetaia said.
Kambosos has more experience than Lomachenko, and most would assume it’s the other way around. He fights more, and that ring time could make the difference.
Ready to Score Another Upset
Loma vs Kambosos odds are too good to pass up for the Aussie, who should only be around +200 to win. Getting +450 for a former world champion against an aging Loma is excellent value, so we’re snapping it up. He should get a lot of crowd support, and as we saw with Australian fighters when the UFC went to RAC Arena, it has a big impact on the result.
Kambosos Jr still has plenty of life in him, and his recent losses to Haney shouldn’t play much part. Loma is a completely different boxer to Haney, and that favors the local.
We’re also happy to take a risk with total rounds markets. The 12-round fight has a line of 10.5, and the over has been backed into -330. However, Kambosos Jr is strong enough to end the fight with a knockout.
