EPL: Tottenham vs Manchester United Odds

United Win Season Opener

Post-Harry Kane Era Underway at Tottenham

Just as Ange Postecoglou’s tenure got going at Tottenham, so did the post-Harry Kane era. Tottenham sold Kane to Bayern Munich for an initial £86.4 million fee, and Spurs drew 2-2 with Brentford in their season opener the next day. Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United got off to a winning start vs Wolves but weren’t at their best. In a pivotal Premier League match, Tottenham host Manchester United on Saturday. We’ll run through the Tottenham vs Manchester United odds in this early-season blockbuster.

Day/Time:
Location: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, England

Head-to-Head

Manchester United are unbeaten in their last five matches vs Tottenham. On last season’s EPL schedule, these teams drew 2-2 in London, and United picked up a 2-0 win in Manchester. Man U are also unbeaten in their last five away games at Tottenham and hold an impressive 6-2-2 record in the previous ten meetings.

Son Named New Tottenham Captain

New Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou wasted no time naming Son Heung-Min Tottenham’s new captain following Harry Kane’s departure. Son, Kane’s longtime sidekick, has scored over 100 Premier League goals for Spurs and won a share of the 2021-22 EPL Golden Boot.

Still, Tottenham will need to try to replace Kane, and a few names have been thrown around so far. Spurs, who already signed 19-year-old striker Alejo Veliz, have been linked with Romelu Lukaku, Mehdi Taremi, Gift Orban, and Folarin Balogun. The most likely transfer seems to be Orban, who has taken the Belgian Pro League by storm.

Orban, a 21-year-old Nigerian striker, has scored 16 goals in 17 league appearances for Gent. Without Kane, Tottenham had no problem scoring against Brentford on Sunday. Cristian Romero opened up the scoring with a header but had to come off due to a suspected concussion shortly after. Brentford roared back with two goals quickly, but Emerson Royal equalized on a long-range strike before the half. The match finished 2-2 as four Tottenham players debuted for the club. Guglielmo Vicario started in goal, while Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven started on the backline.

Most notably, James Maddison started in attacking midfield and provided assists on both of Tottenham’s goals. Maddison arrived from Leicester City earlier this Summer and scored 10 goals and added nine assists last season. However, Spurs are playing at home this weekend, and the Tottenham vs Manchester United odds price the hosts as underdogs.

United Won’t Rush Rasmus Hojlund Back

Manchester United’s marquee Summer signings have been goalkeeper Andre Onana and striker Rasmus Hojlund. Onana has quickly made himself United’s number-one goalkeeper and started the season opener. Meanwhile, Hojlund is out with a back injury he suffered in the preseason with Atalanta. Erik ten Hag has already said that Manchester United won’t rush Hojlund back as they have Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Anthony Martial in the meantime.

Hojlund, a 20-year-old, scored nine goals for Atalanta last season and has six goals in six appearances for Denmark. Rashford led the line on Monday vs Wolves in a subpar performance for Man United. United conceded 23 shots, and Onana was forced to make a few good saves. Raphael Varane’s header was the game’s only goal as Manchester United snagged a 1-0 win.

Last season, Manchester United finished third in the EPL standings and are looking to build on a successful season. Ten Hag won the EFL Cup in his first season as Manchester United boss and has been praised for his decision to strip Harry Maguire of the captaincy. Bruno Fernandes is now United’s captain as Man U try to return to their former glory. They’ll need to string together more consistent performances to be considered title contenders.

Match Analysis & Odds

In a big match for both teams, the Tottenham vs Manchester United odds price Manchester United as +135 moneyline favorites. United have won their last five Premier League matches dating back to last season and have averaged two goals per game during that time. Meanwhile, Tottenham have won just two of their previous nine EPL matches. Ange Postecoglou will certainly want to get his first win in his first home match as Tottenham boss.

However, the EPL odds list Tottenham as +188 underdogs for Saturday’s match. The Spurs have conceded at least two goals in their last five games vs Manchester United. The total opened at 2.5 but has since been adjusted to 3.0 juiced to the under at -125 for the match in a fixture that has usually produced a lot of goals. Five of the last six head-to-head matchups have finished with at least three goals.

Manchester United -0.25 displays +102 odds as a draw sits at +260. Tottenham haven’t won at home in this fixture for over five years, and losing Harry Kane certainly doesn’t help their cause. After an eighth-place finish last season, Spurs should be hungry for a return to European football and shouldn’t exactly be underestimated. Still, bettors should check on Cristian Romero’s injury status throughout the week, as he’s a key defender.
