EPL: Manchester City vs Newcastle Odds

Manchester City Coming off Super Cup Win

Two Champions League Clubs Face Off

Manchester City won their first trophy of the season and fourth in the last three months when they defeated Sevilla in penalties in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. City were missing some key players and needed a comeback to force penalties, but will head into the weekend on a high.

They host fellow Champions League Newcastle United, who started the season in the best way. The Magpies dismantled Aston Villa to a 5-1 win and aren’t afraid of any opposition. In a high-profile Premier League fixture, we’ll look at the Manchester City vs Newcastle odds.

Head-to-Head

Manchester City have dominated recent EPL matches vs Newcastle United. As Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe holds a 0-1-3 record vs. City. Last season, these teams drew in a six-goal thriller in Newcastle, and Manchester City picked up a 2-0 home win.

Bernardo Silva scored in both matches last season, but he’s questionable for Saturday. City have scored at least twice in their previous nine games vs. Newcastle and hold a 7-2-0 record during that time.

Guardiola Hoping Silva, Stones Return for Man City

Manchester City were missing four players for Wednesday’s match vs Sevilla. None of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva were available to play. Pep Guardiola got inventive with his lineup, which ended up paying off. He played Phil Foden, usually a winger, in central midfield and deployed new center back Josko Gvardiol at left back.

City started slowly at first and conceded on an unstoppable Youssef En-Nesyri header. En-Nesyri had other great chances for Sevilla but couldn’t capitalize. That allowed Cole Palmer to score his second goal in three appearances this season on a well-placed header.

The match then went into penalties, and all of City’s players converted. Meanwhile, Sevilla center back Nemanja Gudelj hit the bar with his effort, and City won the UEFA Super Cup. In their Premier League opener, Man City easily defeated Burnley 3-0 as Erling Haaland scored twice.

In the cup matches that City have played so far, Haaland has looked a bit out of sorts, though. Guardiola will need him to get involved here, and that’s more difficult with Kevin de Bruyne out with a new hamstring injury for at least a few months. Perhaps pairing fellow striker Julian Alvarez with Haaland will open up more opportunities for the Norwegian.

Bernardo Silva’s issue has been described as minor, and he and John Stones may be available for selection on Saturday. Although he’s sometimes had a tough time in big games, who could forget Haaland’s incredible debut season? Haaland led the EPL stats with 36 league goals, setting a single-season record.

Needless to say, the Manchester City vs Newcastle odds price the Cityzens as favorites. Don’t expect City to be underdogs in a home match any time soon, no matter who’s absent.

Tonali, Newcastle off to Stunning Start

It took just six minutes for Sandro Tonali to open up his goalscoring account as a Newcastle player. This Summer’s marquee signing for the Magpies had a dream debut. The former AC Milan midfielder put in a man-of-the-match performance as Newcastle destroyed Aston Villa 5-1.

Alexander Isak added two goals as Eddie Howe’s team started their season with a bang. Some expect Newcastle to drop off this season as they play Champions League football for the first time in a long time.

They temporarily silenced their doubters but have quite a long season ahead. In any case, their EPL results since Howe took over in late 2021 have been exemplary, but a win vs Manchester City has been elusive. Notably, Newcastle lost just three away matches in all of the 2022-23 season and have become a tough team to beat.

Along with Tonali, former Leicester City man Harvey Barnes also scored a debut goal. Newcastle also don’t appear to be done in the transfer market yet and have been linked to several names. It seems unlikely the Magpies will wrap up any deals before the weekend, as there are two more weeks left in the window.

Match Analysis & Odds

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Manchester City vs Newcastle odds list City’s handicap as -0.5 at -145, while Newcastle +0.5+125 odds. Even if Bernardo Silva and John Stones don’t return for City, there are plenty of options Pep Guardiola has. Cole Palmer has made the most of his opportunities and we could see another front three of him, Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish.

Regardless, City display -145 odds to win Saturday’s match at the Etihad. Newcastle’s last road win over City in the Premier League came back in 2000. They have rarely, if ever, had a team as strong as the current iteration, though.

The Magpies show +395 odds to come away with all three points, which they’ll want to get with a difficult stretch of games ahead of them. Next weekend Newcastle host Liverpool before heading on the road to Brighton before the first international break of the season.

Newcastle haven’t kept a clean sheet vs Manchester City in any of the last 29 EPL fixtures between the two sides. In fact, City have managed 18 goals in the last five games alone. Still, over 2.5 goals display -135 odds for the match as City and Newcastle had the joint-best defensive records in the league last season. A draw is also priced at +305 odds in this intriguing EPL clash.
