Canada Eliminated, Morocco Nearing Knockout Stage

âš½Canada vs Morocco: Game Recapâš½

Results: Canada 1-2 Morocco

Morocco defeated Canada 2-1 to seal their place in the knockout stages in emphatic style. Morocco, aiming to become the first African nation to finish top of their World Cup group since Nigeria in 1998, didn’t sit back and added a second goal halfway through the period via Youssef En-Nesyri, who rifled home after being put through by Achraf Hakimi. So not only was Morocco hurtling to the top of the group, but they were doing so in style.

Hakim Ziyech set them on their way, seizing on a terrible defensive mistake to finish into an empty net. Soon after, Youssef En-Nesyri doubled the lead in the first half after racing onto an exceptional ball from Achraf Hakimi.

Morocco then conceded their first goal of the tournament, a wicked deflection taking the ball past Bounou. The north African side then thought they had retaken a two-goal lead, but En-Nesyri’s volley was harshly ruled out for offside against Aguerd.

Canada improved in the second half, but Morocco was always in control and saw the remaining time comfortably to be greeted full-time by a deafening reception from their ecstatic fans. There was fun as Canada sent up their goalkeeper in the closing stages in an attempt to secure one last goal. But, ultimately, it came to nothing; the team from the Great North ended their World Cup Campaign without a single point.

After Senegal qualified from Group A, Morocco is the second African team to reach the knockouts. Ghana could join them on Friday if they avoid defeat against Uruguay.

Canada and Morocco have met three times previously, all in international friendlies. Most recently, Morocco defeated Canada 4-0 in 2016. Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech scored two goals in the match but ten of Canada’s starting XI is predicted to be different for their World Cup meeting. This is the first opportunity for punters to take the Canada vs Morocco betting odds in the World Cup.

CANCanada: Early Elimination from World Cup

Standings: 0-2, 0 pts, 4th
Previous Match: 1-4 L vs. Croatia, 0-1 L vs. Belgium

Canada couldn’t have asked for a better start to their match vs. Croatia. Alphonso Davies emphatically headed in a Tajon Buchanan cross just after the minute mark. The goal was a monumental one for Canada, as it was their first-ever in a World Cup. That was about as good as things got, as Croatia’s Andrej Kramaric equalized in the 36th minute. Marko Livaja added a second for Croatia just before the half.

Croatia kept pushing forward and creating chances and Canada’s implosion continued. Kramaric got his second goal of the match and Lovro Majer got Croatia’s fourth goal on a Kamal Miller mistake. Canada looked like the better team in their 1-0 loss to Belgium but they were outclassed in this match. With two losses from their first two matches, Canada are now eliminated from knockout stage contention.

Still, their match vs. Morocco is one of the more intriguing FIFA games this week. If nothing else, Canada have shown they’re not afraid to commit numbers forward and go at opposing defenses. While that’s opened them up to counter attacks defensively, it’s resulted in two very exciting matches. With nothing to lose, don’t expect Canada to suddenly switch to a defensive gameplan.

MARMorocco: Pull off Big Upset

Standings: 1-1-0, 4 pts, 2nd
Previous Match: 2-0 W vs. Belgium, 0-0 D vs. Croatia

Morocco raised a few eyebrows by drawing with Croatia in their opening match. Still, they entered their second match vs. Belgium as +300 underdogs. They also lost goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to a pregame illness. Morocco executed their game plan well on Sunday and thought they had a goal just before halftime. However, Hakim Ziyech’s free kick goal was called back because Roman Saiss was found to be in an offside position and interfering with Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Atlas Lions continued to frustrate Belgium in the second half and shockingly found a breakthrough in the 73rd minute. Substitute Abdelhamid Sabiri’s free kick found the net from an incredibly tight angle. Romain Saiss was later credited with getting a touch on the ball before it went in. Belgium brought on striker Romelu Lukaku to try to get an equalizer but Morocco made them pay on the counter. Ziyech assisted substitute Zakaria Aboukhlal, who fired a shot into the roof of the net in stoppage time. Morocco pulled off a 2-0 upset and got their first World Cup win since 1998.

They’re also now in an excellent position to qualify for the knockout stage and a draw will clinch a berth. Since Walid Regregui took over as Morocco coach in September, they haven’t conceded a goal. Morocco should absolutely be taken seriously after keeping shutouts vs. both Croatia and Belgium. They’re level on four points with Croatia but are second in the FIFA World Cup 2022 standings due to goal difference.

Match Analysis and Odds:

The Canada vs Morocco betting odds list Morocco as ½-goal favorites. Morocco show both +105 moneyline and ATS odds in the match and it’d be a big achievement if they can close out the group stage unbeaten. Canada are -125 favorites to cover the spread but their first match ended in a push and they failed to cover vs. Croatia. Les Rogues also sit at +260 odds to win their first-ever World Cup match.

A draw, which would be a fine result for Morocco, comes in at +245 odds. If Morocco can win this match, though, there’s a good chance they’ll be able to avoid Spain in the round of 16. Don’t expect Canada to fold just because they can’t advance. This is a soccer team with a lot of pride and they’ll want to exit the tournament with a result.

Croatia vs. Belgium game at the same time will get a lot of attention, this could be a good match for parlays.

Not many goals are expected as under 2½ goals sits at -120 odds here. The over comes in at even odds and both of Morocco’s matches have gone under that total. The Atlas Lions undoubtedly want to extend their shutout streak to six. However, Alphonso Davies and Canada show -220 odds to get on the board. While the Croatia vs. Belgium game at the same time will get a lot of attention, this could be a good match for parlays.
