Tunisia vs France Head-to-Head & Recaps

France Already Through, Tunisia Need Win

âš½Tunisia vs France: Game Recapâš½

Results: Tunisia 1-0 France

Tunisia stunned a rotated France side to beat the world champions 1-0. However, more was needed to send them to the Round of 16 stage.

Wahbi Khazri scored the game’s only goal in the 58th minute, but Australia’s win over Denmark saw the Tunisians exit the tournament.

Didier Deschamps made nine changes to his side, with the France manager choosing to rest the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, and Hugo Lloris from the start. They had already booked their place in the next round, so it makes sense. However, Tunisia took advantage of the personnel changes and looked like they would prolong their stay in Qatar.

However, Mathew Leckie’s award on the hour mark for Australia meant that Tunisia finished third in Group D rather than as runners-up.

In the first half, Tunisia had the ball in the back of the net, but Nader Ghandri’s goal was chalked off for offside. Khazri managed to score a legitimate goal before the hour mark, but it was not enough. Griezmann looked to have leveled the scoreline after coming off the bench, but his effort was ruled out for offside by VAR in stoppage time.

France failed to extend their six straight wins at the World Cup, but they still finished as group winners thanks to their victories over Australia and Denmark. Expect to see Mbappe and Griezmann return to France’s starting line-up at the weekend as they take on Poland.

Did We Get It Right?

Below you will find all the predictions we made before the matchup, on November 27, 2022.

France Break Defending Champions’ Curse

With their 2-1 win over Denmark, France became the first World Cup defending champions to advance to the knockout stage since Brazil in 2006. While qualification is already secured, Les Bleus just need a point vs. Tunisia to clinch the group. Tunisia have sat back often during the tournament but they’ll need to go all out to win to stay alive. We’ll review the latest odds and news in this Tunisia vs France head to head matchup.

Les Bleus are on top of the Tunisia vs France head to head standings. They’ve won two, drawn two and lost one vs. the North African nation. Most recently, Tunisia drew with France 1-1 in a 2010 friendly. They’ve never met at the FIFA World Cup before.

Tunisia: Still Looking for First Goal

Standings: 0-1-1, T-3rd
Previous Match: L, 0-1 vs. Australia

Tunisia have been one of the most defensive-minded teams at the World Cup. They play with five at the back and two defensive midfielders in an effort to suffocate their opponents. It worked in their first match vs. Denmark, which they drew 0-0. It took a brilliant header from Australia’s Mitchell Duke to break down Tunisia in the second match. The Eagles of Carthage fell 1-0 and haven’t yet scored at the tournament.

They’ll need to pull off a massive upset to stay in the FIFA World Cup 2022, which could involve a shift in strategy. Coach Jalel Kadri is unlikely to completely switch around his lineup as playing a more attacking game could leave Tunisia vulnerable. Expect substitutions and for French-born striker Wahbi Khazri to play a part. Montpellier’s Khazri has started on the bench in both matches but is Tunisia’s second-leading scorer of all-time.

Youssef Msakni looked very active in Tunisia’s match vs. Australia and looked like the Eagles of Carthage player most likely to score. If Tunisia win it’ll be just their third World Cup win of all-time and it’d be just the second time they manage four points in a campaign. Tunisia have still never advanced to the knockout stage in five previous attempts but they have a mountain to climb here.

France: Back Where They Belong

Standings: 2-0, 1st
Previous Match: W, 2-1 vs. Denmark

Injuries to France’s key players N’Golo Kante, Paul Pogba and Karim Benzema tempered their expectations for the tournament. Many wondered whether Les Bleus would succumb to the same fate as prior defending champions. So far, France have silenced all of the doubters and managed to win their first two matches. France became the first team in the tournament to clinch knockout stage qualification, with a 2-1 win over Denmark. Les Bleus avoided a third straight defeat to Denmark in the process and look quite dangerous.

Kylian Mbappe has picked up where he left off when he won the Best Young Player Award in 2018. The mercurial winger has scored three times in two games and looks almost impossible to contain. He’s a strong contender to win the Golden Boot and his teammate Olivier Giroud is nearing an impressive record. Giroud, who scored twice vs. Australia, is just one goal away from breaking the all-time French record. Other players, like Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann are also attacking threats.

France are sitting pretty in first in the Group D 2022 FIFA world cup standings but it’s in their best interest to clinch the group. Argentina are widely expected to win Group C and would take on the Group D runners up. If France can get a draw or win, they’ll likely avoid La Albiceleste in the round of 16.

Match Analysis and Odds:

Heading into Wednesday’s match, France are one-goal favorites and sit at -105 odds to cover. Tunisia are implied to be more likely to cover, at -115 but recall that a draw does nothing for them here. Expect Tunisia to throw numbers forward towards the end of the match if they’re trailing or tied. A draw comes in at +285 odds and has occurred two of the last three times these teams have met.

The Tunisia vs. France head to head odds also price France as -180 moneyline favorites. If they’re able to win it’ll be the first time they finish a group stage perfect since 1998. That year, they won the World Cup as hosts.

Tunisia come in at a +575 price to win but they’re way more likely to fail to score. A France shutout sits at even odds and it’d be the first time ever Tunisia fail to score at a World Cup.

It’s possible that France find it difficult to break Tunisia down. Also don’t discount France coach Didier Deschamps shuffling around the lineup a bit to rest some of his key guys for the round of 16. France have one of the deepest teams in the tournament so it shouldn’t be too big of a drop off. It’ll certainly be interesting to see if Tunisia can hang around long enough to push for a winner.
