Guadeloupe Going for First Gold Cup Win Since 2009

Guadeloupe managed to qualify for a second consecutive Gold Cup. Appearances have been rare for the Caribbean nation and they’ll face a tough test in their 2023 Gold Cup opener. Canada host Guadeloupe in Toronto on Tuesday in just the third-ever meeting between the two sides. Canada are one of the favorites to win the tournament and recently made the CONCACAF Nations League final. With the loss still fresh in Les Rogues’ minds, we’ll take a look at the Canada vs Guadeloupe odds.

Head-to-Head

Canada and Guadeloupe have only met twice previously, both in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The CONCACAF dates for their head-to-head matchups were 2007 and 2011. Most recently, Canada defeated Guadeloupe 1-0 as Dwayne De Rosario’s penalty was the difference. Guadeloupe managed to beat Canada 2-1 in the 2007 Group Stage.

Canada’s Squad Much-Changed

  • Next Match: Jul. 1 vs. Guatemala

Canada’s Gold Cup roster is much-changed from their CONCACAF Nations League squad. Some of Canada’s key players have gotten a rest before they head back to their club teams.

The goalscorers from their Nations League semifinal win over Panama, Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies are not in the squad. European-based players like Alistair Johnston, Tajon Buchanan, Cyle Larin and Ismael Kone are out of the squad.

Plus, longtime captain Atiba Hutchinson following Canada’s 2-0 Nations League final loss to the USA. Hutchinson, with 104 caps, is Canada’s all-time appearances leader. Over the last few years, Canada have established themselves as one of the best teams in CONCACAF. Even without some key guys, big things are expected here.

This is a good opportunity for Lucas Cavallini, who has scored 18 goals in 36 appearances. The forward hasn’t received much playing time lately behind Larin and David but should be a starter here. Heading into the tournament, the Gold Cup betting odds price Les Rogues at +600 to win the whole thing.

Guadeloupe Seal Gold Cup Qualification

  • Next Match: Jul. 1 vs. Cuba

Unlike Canada, Guadeloupe did not automatically qualify for the Gold Cup. Instead, the Gwada Boys advanced to the final tournament through the qualifying rounds. In the first qualifying round, Guadeloupe defeated Antigua & Barbuda 5-0 as five different players got on the scoresheet. That set up a meeting with Guyana with a Gold Cup berth on the line. Guadeloupe managed a shutout and 2-0 win to qualify for a second straight Gold Cup.

Last time around, Guadeloupe went 0-3 in the group stage and the Canada vs Guadeloupe odds price the Gwada boys as underdogs here. In fact, Guadeloupe are on an eight-game losing streak in the Gold Cup. Still, they haven’t lost by more than a one-goal margin in nearly two years.

The Gwada Boys do have an experienced back line, with the likes of Cedric Avinel and Mickaël Alphonse. Forwards Matthias Phaeton and Thierry Ambrose will also be relied upon to score goals.

Match Analysis and Odds

Canada head into their 2023 Gold Cup opener vs. Guadeloupe as 1.5-goal favorites. Canada’s last eight wins in CONCACAF have come by a two-goal margin or more. Les Rogues sit at -145 ATS odds and the Canada vs Guadeloupe odds price Canada as -525 moneyline favorites.

Guadeloupe’s only other match in the last three years vs. a top-50 team in the FIFA World Rankings was a 2021 Gold Cup match vs. Costa Rica. A 10-man Guadeloupe fell 3-1 on the day. Guadeloupe +1.5 displays +115 odds and the Gwada Boys are +1600 moneyline underdogs.

A draw shows +525 odds and Guadeloupe would certainly take one given their recent results at the Gold Cup. Canada averaged over 2.5 goals per game in the 2021 Gold Cup group stage. Here, over 2.5 goals are priced at -125 odds.
