CONCACAF Gold Cup: Haiti vs Qatar Odds

Group B Opener

Qatar Look to Build Off 2021 Semifinal Appearance

The CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off on Saturday when the USA takes on Jamaica in Chicago. On Sunday, Group B opens up with Haiti vs. Qatar. Qatar are, of course, an AFC team but they’ve been invited guests to the last two Gold Cups. They made the 2021 Gold Cup semifinals and are looking to build on their performance. Haiti also head into this match on a five-game winning streak. Let’s preview the Haiti vs. Qatar odds in an intriguing group-stage match.

CONCACAF Gold Cup

Haiti vs Qatar

Date, time:
Location: NRG Stadium, Houston, USA

Head-to-Head

Haiti and Qatar have met just once previously, in a 2010 friendly. On the day, Haiti came away with a 1-0 win. Currently, the soccer betting lines favor Qatar and they’re ranked higher in the FIFA World Rankings. Qatar are ranked 61st and Haiti come in at 87th.

Haiti Dominate in Nations League B

  • Next Match: Jun. 29 vs. Mexico

Haiti advanced to CONCACAF Nations League A with an undefeated performance in Nations League B. After drawing 0-0 with Bermuda in their first match, they won their last five games.

Les Grenadiers outscored their opponents 22-5 in the process. Three Haitian players were top-five goalscorers in the Nations League B. Carnejy Antoine led the league with five goals, and Mondy Prunier was joint-second with four.

Derrick Etienne Jr. added three goals and finished fifth in the scoring charts. Following Haiti’s campaign, Jean Jacques Pierre’s coaching contract ran out. Shortly after, the Haitian Football Federation appointed interim coach Gabriel Calderon Pellegrino. Since then, Haiti are yet to play a match.

However, Pellegrino named all three of Antoine, Prunier and Etienne Jr. to his preliminary 28-man squad. Antoine has found the net 10 times in just 13 appearances with the Haiti national team and plays his club soccer in Israel. Frantzdy Pierrot, who has an excellent ratio of 14 goals in 23 matches, also plays in Israel.

Haiti went 1-2 at the Gold Cup in 2021 and failed to make it out of the group stage. However, they advanced to the semifinals in 2019 and have now qualified for a third straight Gold Cup—still, the Haiti vs Qatar odds price Les Grenadiers as underdogs for this match.

Qatar Struggle in First World Cup Appearance

  • Next Match: Jun. 29 vs. Honduras

Qatar became the first nation in the Middle East to host the World Cup in 2022, which also meant participating in their first World Cup. The Maroons struggled in their first appearance and were one of just two teams to lose all three of their matches.

Just about the only positive from Qatar’s first World Cup foray was Mohammed Muntari’s goal vs. Senegal. Overall, Qatar’s opponents outscored them 7-1.

The Gold Cup odds price Qatar as favorites here and they’ve had an eventful lead-up to the tournament. Qatar took on New Zealand on Monday in an international friendly, but the match was abandoned.

A Qatari player allegedly called New Zealand player Michael Boxall, who is ethnically Samoan, a racial slur. Qatar were down 1-0 when New Zealand refused to come out for the second half.

Last week, Qatar picked up a 2-1 win over Jamaica but also lost 1-0 to a Croatia B team in early June. Qatar’s joint all-time leading scorer Almoez Ali is on the roster here, along with World Cup scorer Muntari. Some experienced Qatar players, like Abdelkarim Hassan, Hassan al-Haydos and Akram Afif, are not on the Gold Cup roster.

Match Analysis and Odds

This will be Haiti and Qatar’s first competitive meeting. Haiti have managed to pick up at least one win in each of their last five appearances in the Gold Cup. Meanwhile, in Qatar’s first Gold Cup appearance, in 2021, they went 3-1-1. The Haiti vs Qatar odds price the Maroons as 0.5-goal favorites. Qatar come in at +110 ATS and moneyline odds as Haiti +0.5 shows -140 odds.

Since July 2021, Haiti have lost just one match, but they are +140 moneyline underdogs for Sunday’s match. Notably, Haiti haven’t beaten a team in the top 100 of FIFA’s rankings since 2019.

They’ve lost three straight to Canada and haven’t beaten the USA since 1973. In any case, a draw displays +225 odds vs. Qatar. Under 2.5 goals show -125 odds but Haiti have averaged over four goals per game on their five-game winning streak.
