Three Lions Look for First World Cup Win over USA

âš½England vs USA: Game Recapâš½

Results: England 0 – 0

The USMNT surprised the World as they dominated their rivals from across the pond in a 0-0 draw. While the US did not have many chances on goal, they looked like the better side, especially in the midfield.

A dull first half brought forward very few chances, although Harry Kane’s shot from inside the area deflected wide. At the other end of the pitch, Weston McKennie did manage to send the ball over the bar when he had a golden opportunity after a drag-back.

After the break, though, the United States had the better of the contest. They had a succession of corners, with Harry Maguire’s ability to get his head on the ball and clear it crucial to the game-staying level. However, Harry Kane did miss a key header in the last stages that could have won the game for his side.

With the match ending in a draw, both teams need to go into their final games with their fate entirely in their hands.

For England, the draw puts them on four points, one point ahead of Iran in second place. They face bottom-placed Wales in their final game. If England gets the point, they will end the group on five points, guaranteeing them a place in the top two. Should Iran beat the USA, it would mean they finish in second. If the USA beat Iran by fewer than five goals, they would take the top spot.

It’s also a positive result for the USA. They now know that a win against Iran is the only way they can qualify for the tournament’s knockout stages. Of course, a win would have been better, but a draw means they have a straightforward task going into Tuesday. At least their fans believe that they can win.

How Did We Do?

Below you will find all the predictions we made before the matchup, on November 23, 2022.

England Shuts Down Doubters in First Match

Gareth Southgate’s England came into the World Cup as one of the most out of form teams in the tournament. England failed to win a match at the recent UEFA Nations League and got relegated to the B League. Regardless, the Three Lions demolished Iran 6-2 in their first match and look to continue their momentum vs. the USA on Friday. England are looking for their first World Cup win vs. the USA in three meetings. Let’s take a look at the England vs USA betting odds in their first World Cup match since 2010.

This fixture certainly hasn’t been kind to the USA recently. The Stars and Stripes are winless in the last five meetings with just two goals scored. Most recently, England comfortably defeated the USA 3-0 in a 2018 friendly, when Dave Sarachan was the USA’s head coach. The most recent World Cup meeting, in 2010, finished in a 1-1 draw. England finished second behind the USA World Cup standings that year.

England: Off to a Flying Start

Standings: 1-0 (1st, Group B)
Previous Match: W, 6-2 vs. Iran
Upcoming Match: Nov. 29 vs. Wales

A 19-year old Bukayo Saka was tasked with taking the decisive penalty in the European Championship final vs. Italy last year. Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the penalty and Saka was visibly in tears in a heartbreaking moment and loss. Saka has responded incredibly to the disappointment at the Euros and has been in incredible form for Arsenal over the last couple of years. The winger rewarded Gareth Southgate’s faith in him with two goals in a huge 6-2 win over Iran on Monday.

Saka was tied with Enner Valencia and Mehdi Taremi for the joint-World Cup lead after the first seven matches of the tournament. He, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling form a formidable England attack that caused problems all day for Iran. The England vs USA betting odds price the Three Lions at -135 odds to score two or more goals.

The only fault one could find with England in their opening match was conceding twice. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last four matches but it won’t matter if they score the way they did on Monday. Midfielder Jude Bellingham provided a big boost to England and he’ll once again be key on Friday. Southgate also got big contributions from his subs, as Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish scored vs. Iran.

USA: Conceded Late Penalty vs. Wales

Standings: 0-1-0 (T-2nd, Group B)
Previous Match: D, 1-1 vs. Wales
Upcoming Match: Nov. 29 vs. Iran

The USA’s first half performance vs. Wales was one of the best of Gregg Berhalter’s tenure. The US put a lot of pressure on Wales and Tim Weah deserved his goal, which was set up by a clever through ball from Christian Pulisic. The US tailed off in the second half and allowed Wales back in the game. USA goalkeeper Matt Turner made an excellent save on a Ben Davies header in the 64th minute but Welsh chances kept coming.

USA defender Walker Zimmerman gave away an unnecessary penalty by fouling Gareth Bale when Bale had his back to goal. Bale stepped up and coolly slotted home the first Wales World Cup goal since 1958. Wales had other chances to take the lead but the match finished at 1-1. It was a disappointing result for the US in light of the first half.

Still, the USA show -125 World Cup betting odds to advance to the knockout stage. A result in this match would greatly help their case but they figure to be under high pressure. It’s rare that the US have to defend for the majority of a CONCACAF match so this could be uncharted territory for them. It remains to be seen whether Turner and the back line can stand up to the pressure.

Match Analysis and Odds:

England come into this Black Friday match as one-goal favorites. The US sit at shorter odds to cover the spread, at -115. The Three Lions, who have won just one of their last seven international matches, show -105 ATS odds. The England vs USA betting odds also price England as -180 favorites and they could clinch the group with a win and Wales draw vs. Qatar. The Three Lions haven’t won their World Cup group since 2006.

A deadlock shows +315 odds and the infamous 2010 World Cup meeting finished that way.

The USA sit at +500 odds to win but haven’t beaten England since 1993. Gregg Berhalter’s side haven’t won any of their last four matches either. The US very rarely play teams of England’s caliber and don’t have any recent signature wins. Heading into their last match vs. Iran, the USA will certainly take a draw here. A deadlock shows +315 odds and the infamous 2010 World Cup meeting finished that way.

The last six times this fixture has been played it has finished with two or three goals. Unsurprisingly, the over/under goal total sits at 2½ and the over is implied to be more likely at -115 odds. England have scored nine goals in their last two matches in all competitions and it’ll be a huge challenge for the USA to keep a shutout here.
