Head-to-Head

This is the first-ever meeting between the Republic of Ireland and Nigeria on the World Cup schedule. They’ve never met in any competition before. The Republic of Ireland have won their last two matches against African teams. Meanwhile, Nigeria have just a 1-2-10 record vs UEFA teams in their FIFA Women’s World Cup history.

Republic of Ireland Get First World Cup Goal

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 22
    • Last Match: 1-2 L vs. Canada
    • Standings: 0-2, 4th Group B

Perhaps a bit unlucky not to pick up a point in their first two matches, the Republic of Ireland are eliminated from knockout stage contention. They held a dangerous Australia side to one goal in their first game but could not get on the scoresheet. The Girls and Green struck first in their next match, vs Canada, as Katie McCabe scored directly from a corner kick.

In one of the most exciting World Cup matches so far, Canada mounted a comeback to win 2-1. Irish keeper Courtney Brosnan made some stunning saves in the defeat to keep things close. McCabe was also a massive problem for Australia to deal with, and it’s obvious to see why she’s captain of the team. While they’re still looking for their first World Cup win, the Girls in Green have conceded a respectable three goals through two matches.

This year has been difficult for the Republic of Ireland women’s national team. They’ve won just one of the seven matches they’ve played. The Girls in Green have also failed to score in five of their seven games. They’ll look to finish their first Women’s World Cup on a high note vs Nigeria.

Nigeria Defying Expectations

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 40
  • Last Match: 3-2 W vs. Australia
  • Standings: 1-1-0, 1st Group B

Ranked 40th in the FIFA Women’s World rankings, Nigeria are the lowest-ranked side in Group B. However, they’re at the top of the standings through two matches and have gotten their two most difficult games, on paper, out of the way. In their opener, Nigeria managed to snag a draw vs Olympic champions Canada.

Then, Nigeria took on co-hosts Australia, who were missing Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler. Regardless, the Super Falcons conceded first. Nigeria displayed resilience to get an equalizer within minutes. In fact, they went up 3-1 by the 72nd minute and conceded a late goal to win 3-2. It’s an excellent result for Nigeria, who got a Women’s World Cup come-from-behind victory for the first time.

Now, the Republic of Ireland vs Nigeria odds price the Super Falcons as favorites for this Group B closer. Nigeria have been an excellent pick for betting on soccer through their first two games. They’ve gone 2-0 ATS so far and have outperformed the spread by at least a 1.5-goal margin on both occasions. Nigeria will take a ton of momentum into their final group-stage game.

Match Analysis & Odds

Nigeria have trailed for just five minutes all tournament and have managed to get results despite not having much possession. While all three points would be nice for the Super Falcons, they just need to avoid defeat here. The Republic of Ireland vs Nigeria odds list Nigeria as 0.5-goal favorites. They come in at both +110 ATS and moneyline odds, while a draw displays +245 odds.

Bettors should not expect the Republic of Ireland to pack it in here despite early elimination. They’ll still want to pick up their first-ever Women’s World Cup win and are +215 underdogs to do so. The Girls and Green show -140 odds to cover the spread as well. Notably, Nigeria substitute Asisat Oshoala became the first Super Falcons player to score in three separate editions of the World Cup with her coolly taken finish vs Australia. Nigeria also scored three goals for just the fourth time in 28 World Cup matches. Here, over 2.5 goals come in at -145 odds.
