Alek Manoah Stats: Toronto Pitcher Struggling in 2023

Alek Manoah has been a key member of the Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff since 2021. After putting together two impressive MLB seasons, the Alek Manoah stats have simply fallen off a cliff in 2023. He simply isn’t the same pitcher he was his first two seasons. The Blue Jays sent him to the minors on June 6 to get things figured out.

As a rookie, the Alek Manoah stats were impressive for not pitching a full season. Manoah made 20 starts and had a 9-2 record with a 3.22 ERA. He struck out 127 hitters in 111 2/3 innings and issued 40 walks.

He did lead the league in hit batters with 16. But it was a strong rookie season. He finished eighth in the Rookie of the Year voting.

The Alex Manoah stats were even better in his sophomore season. Manoah was 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA. He had 180 strikeouts in 196 2/3 innings. Manoah did walk 51 batters and led the league in hit batters a second consecutive year with 15.

You can’t blame anybody who was expecting another big season for Manoah in 2023, but that hasn’t been the case. At the time of his demotion, Manoah’s MLB stats showed a 1-7 record with a 6.36 ERA.

The Blue Jays won his first three starts of the year. Then Toronto went 1-9 in his next 10 starts and decided they had seen enough. He was definitely somebody you wanted to bet against in your MLB picks and parlays.

Pitch Clock to Blame?

Some are saying the pitch clock has hurt Manoah. Others believe his lack of being in shape has caught up to him. Whatever the reason, his numbers aren’t pretty to look at. Through June 6, Manoah pitched 58 innings and walked 42, while striking out 48. He surrendered 68 hits and hit five batters.

Despite an ugly start to 2023, Manoah’s career stats still aren’t that bad. He has a lifetime 26-16 record with a 3.19 ERA. He’s struck out 355 hitters in 366 1/3 innings and allowed 289 hits. The Blue Jays are 38-27 in the games he has started in his career.
