As the sequel to their thrilling tilt this weekend, the Connecticut Sun visit the Washington Mystics this Tuesday night. This time, Washington is expected to win per the Sun vs Mystics odds. Connecticut has won four of these teams’ last five meetings. But it’s Washington that has done better on the spread with a 3-1-1 record against the spread (ATS). How can Washington avenge Sunday’s loss?

Connecticut is Doing Just Fine

The Sun were expected to take a step back when their MVP, Jonquel Jones, left town. So far that hasn’t been the case the team is just one of two 2-0 outfits in the WNBA. Connecticut overcame a 24-14 deficit in the first quarter to edge the Mystics in their home opener. In this rematch, the Sun vs Mystics odds now have Connecticut as the underdog.

Connecticut’s early struggles can’t be overlooked. The team shot just 5-of-19 from the field and committed seven fouls. It had a hard time containing Elena Delle Donne who put up eight points and three boards in seven-and-a-half minutes of action.

Tiffany Hayes, the team’s main new addition, also shot just 3-of-10 from the field. The trio of Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and Brionna Jones carried the team. But Bonner still shot just 6-of-17 from the field.

The Sun had a nice start to their WNBA schedule by playing the hapless Indiana Fever to start. They beat the Mystics at home by locking them down. Washington shot just 14-of-35 in the second half. But Connecticut can ill afford to be inefficient on offense, especially with the action moving to enemy court.

If this game is more of the same as the first, betting the total to go under could be the shrewd play on the Sun vs Mystics odds.

Mystics Need Better Long-Range Shooting

There were plenty of good and bad in the Mystics’ loss to the Sun. The good news is that Delle Donne and Shakira Austin make a fantastic one-two punch.

The former posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards and resembles her 2019 form. The latter, last year’s third overall pick, was unstoppable in the middle with her own double-double: 21 points and 11 boards. She made 10 of her 14 field goal attempts.

While the Mystics got shut down in the second-half, Austin remained potent and was the reason why Washington held on. She should have another big game this Tuesday hence the Sun vs Mystics odds are in favor of her team.

But the bad news is that the team ran out of gas as the game went on and the poor outside shooting is mainly to blame. Washington made just three of its 21 3-point field attempts. Natasha Cloud and Ariel Atkins missed all eight of their attempts.

Delle Donne also slowed down considerably after her hot start. If Washington is going to be a frontrunner, it will need to find a way to maintain its lead. It did well on the defensive end but on the event it can’t contain all of its opponent’s stars, it needs shooting.

Washington will likely rectify that problem. If it can’t, the team could find itself on the wrong side of the WNBA standings.
