Shorthanded Warriors Remain Underdogs on Road

The Golden State Warriors went to Toronto and took out the Raptors without two of their best players. Now, they look to pull off the same feat as they visit the surging New York Knicks.

The NBA odds have Golden State as a smaller underdog now at 4.5 points. Per the latest Warriors vs Knicks analysis, Golden State has won 13 of its last 16 against New York. Can they keep this trend in their undermanned state?

An Encore to the Warriors’ Poole Party?

Stephen Curry who? When they needed him most, Jordan Poole showed out in Toronto. The 23-year-old has struggled all season but torched the Raptors for a career-high 43 points on 60.9 percent shooting. He was the main reason why Golden State raced to a 68-54 lead in halftime.

“He’s played a lot of great NBA games for us,”
“If it’s not the best, it’s definitely one of the few best. He was great at both ends.
His defense was excellent, I thought he was patient offensively, got us into our offense well. He just set the tone and he carried us.” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said.

It’s unlikely that Poole drops another 40-point game against the Knicks. Still, Golden State’s performance has moved the NBA betting lines and they are down to +170 underdogs. Per the Warriors vs Knicks analysis,Golden State is meeting a tougher opponent here even if it has owned New York in recent history.

Golden State beat the Knicks by 10 in their first meeting this NBA season. Poole was off that night as he shot just 5-of-17 from the field for 13 points. Curry and Andrew Wiggins did the heavy lifting on offense as they scored 44 of the Warriors’ 111 points. Now, both are sidelined.

The Warriors’ win over Toronto is their first without Curry this season (1-4). The road victory was also just their third in 17 tries. Fortunately for Golden State, the Knicks are not that great at home either: 7-7 and 5-7-2 against the spread (ATS). Considering these stats, the NBA matchup odds become clearer.

Knicks Got It Going Again

Are the Knicks truly back? The Knicks have won and covered seven straight games. They beat the Cavaliers and held the Kings to under 100 points in another notable win. Most importantly, these two wins came at home. New York has struggled to perform under the bright lights of its own home court. But the team is now at .500.

The Knicks are getting it done via their defense. New York has a whopping player defensive rating of 99.0 in this seven-game stretch. New York had the third-best defensive rating in their successful 2020-21 campaign. It fell to 11th last season and the Knicks just could get not impose their will as effectively.

The cherry on top for the Knicks is the team’s fiery offense. New York’s offensive NBA rating is at 113.5 (11th in the NBA) during this stretch. The improved play of R.J. Barrett has been a catalyst. The Canadian is averaging 25.2 points on 47.4 percent shooting in his last five games.

A third-overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Barrett abstained from competitive basketball games during the summer. This contributed to his less-than-ideal start to his fourth season. But if his recent performances are an indication, he is beginning to hit his stride.

“It was weird, not really getting to even play runs like I normally do. Really Just going the whole time without basketball. It was a little weird,” Barrett said in regards to the lack of competitive basketball as a factor for his slow start this season. “[I] got it done, trying to figure it out a little bit. Have a long way to go. Have to keep working.”

Other than that, the Knicks have the benefit of staying relatively free from NBA injuries. If they can keep it going on both ends of the floor, the Warriors vs Knicks analysis should lean toward the Knicks more. Shutting down Golden State is a start so watch out for the totals going under 224.5.
