SDSU Looking for Redemption

San Diego State is on to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season after routing 13th-seeded Yale 85-57. The Aztecs — 5.5-point favorites and seeded fifth — led wire-to-wire thanks to 26 points from Jaedon Lee.

The last remaining tournament team from the Mountain West, which put six schools in the field of 68, San Diego State is 26-10. The Aztecs have fared well against ranked opponents, including an 84-74 victory at Gonzaga on Dec. 29. That’s one of four Quad 1 wins for Brian Dutcher’s team.

As usual, San Diego State has been fueled by its defense. The Aztecs are ranked ninth in adjusted defensive efficiency, 15th in field goal defense and 28th in opponents’ scoring (66.3 PPG allowed). They held both UAB and Yale to 37% shooting.

The Aztecs play through Lee, a 6-foot-9 forward averaging 21.5 points on 56.4% shooting. Lee has 58 points in two tournament games and four games this season with 30 points or more. USC transfer Reese Waters (9.8 PPG) has been a solid sidekick.

The Aztecs have been an underdog seven times this season, but never by more than 6.5 points. They went 2-5 ATS and OU in those games. That’s important to remember when analyzing the San Diego State vs UConn odds.

Defending Champs Marching Along

UConn, the top overall seed in the March Madness bracket and reigning NCAA champion, advanced with a 75-58 victory over ninth-seeded Northwestern. The Huskies, 14.5-point favorites, led by as many as 30 points and have covered in eight straight March Madness games dating to the 2022 first round against New Mexico State.

The Huskies (33-3) have won nine consecutive games, including a 73-57 victory over Marquette in the Big East Tournament final. They are 8-1 ATS during that stretch, averaging 82 points.

Dan Hurley’s team has a nearly flawless resume, highlighted by 21 Quad 1 and 2 wins and outstanding peripheral rankings (No. 1 KenPom, No. 2 NET).

Led by AP All-American guard Tristen Newton, the Huskies are averaging 81.6 points for the season and rank top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. They’ve beaten teams by an average of 17.6 points, the second-highest differential in Division I behind McNeese State (plus-17.7).

The Huskies have been favored in nearly every game this season, except for a 69-65 loss to Kansas on Dec. 1. As a double-digit favorite, the Huskies are 13-7 ATS and 20-0 OU. Their only other losses came in Big East play against Seton Hall and Creighton.

Handicapping the Odds

After coasting through the opening two rounds, UConn is now -230 to win the East Region and +210 favorites to win the national championship. At the moment, fellow No. 1 seed Houston (+500) is the only other school with 5/1 title odds or better.

It’s no secret why. The Huskies are a machine, built to beat opponents in whatever way possible.

San Diego State has a legitimate No. 1 scorer in Lee, but the Aztecs’ lack of offensive depth could be an issue against the high-powered Huskies. They also don’t really have anyone to contend with the 7-foot-2 Donovan Clingan, who had 14 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks versus Northwestern.
