Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball History

Before the Gonzaga Bulldogs became the WCC powerhouse it is today, the program was largely irrelevant. As an independent, Gonzaga was competitive though unremarkable. You can find this team as a favorite on the NCAAB odds if they were offered. And that was largely because Gonzaga played lesser schools.

The Bulldogs began to rise to prominence during the 1960s with Hank Anderson as the head coach. Frank Burgess, who led the Gonzaga Bulldogs standings became the first to be mentioned in the All-American honors. John Stockton achieved a similar feat in 1984.

The program then joined the Big Sky where it typically struggled other than a few NCAAB seasons. In 1966, Gonzaga won its first conference title and then again in the following season. These would be their most notable achievements until the 1990s.

Dan Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history during the 1994-95 season. Then a few years later, under new coach Dan Monson, the Bulldogs finally broke through. Gonzaga advanced deep into March Madness with its first Elite Eight appearance.

And as Monson left for Minnesota, Mark Few took over. This would signal the start of Gonzaga’s ascent as one of college basketball’s preeminent WCC powers (which it joined at the start of his tenure during the 1999-2000 season).

Under Few, Gonzaga continually made the NCAA Tournament. It has also won at least one game in all but three seasons. The program also became a recruiting powerhouse, which led to the Associated Press (AP) ranking Gonzaga as the number-one team, at one point, in at least six seasons beginning from 2011-12.

Five-star recruits like Chet Holmgren, Jalen Suggs, and Domantas Sabonis played in Bulldog colors and went on to become highly-touted NBA Draft picks. Holmgren was selected second overall, the highest for a Gonzaga player.

The school also came this close to winning the National Championship twice: in both 2017 and 2021. Gonzaga’s 2021 run was close to perfect. The team featured players like Suggs, Corey Kispert, and Drew Timme. They lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs standings.

The Bulldogs entered as the number-one team and never faltered. It won all but three games in double digits to the title game. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs lost to the Baylor Bears.

Gonzaga remains one of the best NCAA basketball teams under Few. This program will continue to hunt for a national title and may finally win it sometime soon.
