Louisville vs Georgia Tech Preview: Cardinals Strong Favorites in Brohm’s Debut

Expectations High as Former Purdue Head Coach Brohm Takes Over at Louisville

Georgia Tech Looks to Build Off Promising Finish to 2022 Football Season

Louisville begins the post-Malik Cunningham era with a trip to Atlanta for a matchup with ACC rival Georgia Tech. The Louisville vs Georgia Tech preview has the Cardinals favored by eight points in the AFLAC Kickoff Game.

Although the teams play in the same conference, the series history is pretty limited with Georgia Tech winning 46-27 as the 4.5-point underdog in 2020 and 66-31 when favored by 5.5 points according to the college football betting odds in 2018.

Louisville center Bryan Hudson earned first-team preseason All-ACC honors.

Neither team is in the top 25 in the NCAA football rankings. However, Louisville is receiving votes in the Associated Press preseason poll.

Louisville is tied for third for the best odds to win the ACC title, trailing only defending champion Clemson and Florida State. Georgia Tech is tied with Boston College, Virginia, and Virginia Tech for the longest odds to win the conference title.

Brohm Returning Home

Former Louisville quarterback Jeff Brohm returns home as he left Purdue to take over the Cardinals’ program.

With Cunningham off to the NFL, former Purdue and California quarterback Jack Plummer is slated to be the starting quarterback for what figures to be a pass-happy offense with the Cardinals.

Running backs Jawhar Jordan and Maurice Turner combined for more than 1,200 rushing yards a season ago.

Purdue finished last in the Big Ten in three of the last four seasons in rushing defense so it remains to be seen how much Louisville will run the ball now that Brohm is back with the Cardinals.

Keep an eye on Ashton Gillotte as he had six sacks a season ago and a veteran secondary. His ability to rush the passer could factor into the Louisville vs Georgia Tech preview.

Yellow Jackets Look to Sting Favored Cardinals

Georgia Tech posted wins over North Carolina and Virginia Tech late in the season and will look to build on that success.

The Yellow Jackets covered three of the last four games in 2022 and keep that in mind when looking at the Louisville vs Georgia Tech preview.

Brent Key was given the head-coaching job after taking over as the interim coach after Geoff Collins was fired and showed enough to be given the job on a permanent basis. The win over North Carolina probably did the trick.

Georgia Tech added 16 players through the transfer portal as Key looks to help the Yellow Jackets take the next step in 2023.

Nine of the transfers came on the offensive side of the ball, including Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King, Louisville running back Trevlon Cooley, Alabama receiver Christian Leary, and the Georgia pass-catching tandem of Dominick Blaylock and Brett Seither.

The defense needs to replace edge rusher Keion White as he is off to the NFL. Mississippi State safety Justin Brown and Clemson defensive tackle Etinosa Reuben could help.

Last Meeting

When looking at the NCAA football scores, Georgia Tech erupted for 32 points in the second half to roll to the three-score victory. Four different Georgia Tech players rushed for touchdowns to offset a four-TD game by Cunningham.

The teams combined for 921 yards as the game had no issues going over the 63-point total.

What to Expect

Good luck figuring that out with two first-year head coaches. At least Key got to work with the Georgia Tech players a season ago. Brohm is starting from scratch.

Louisville covered in six of the last eight games played in 2022 with Georgia Tech going 6-3 against the spread over the last nine games.

Bear in mind that Georgia Tech has dropped its last seven games against teams from the ACC Atlantic Division.

Louisville finished fifth and Georgia Tech ranked 12th in total defense among ACC teams a season ago so it will be worth watching how these defenses fare in the season opener.

Georgia Tech was second and Louisville third in turnover margin in the ACC last season as they combined to intercept 26 passes and come up with 28 fumble recoveries.

Georgia Tech covered in six of the last seven games when the Yellow Jackets came into the game as the underdogs.

Louisville was 4-2 straight up and against the spread as the favorite in 2022.
