Notre Dame 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

Irish Poised to Make Noise on the National Scene

Head coach Marcus Freeman guided Notre Dame to a 9-4 record in his first season. The Irish had a few bumps along the way that can occur with a new coach. But for all purposes, the 2022 season was a good one. The new season brings a new quarterback in Sam Hartman, and the 2023 Notre Dame stats should be solid on the offensive side of the ball.

Irish Look to Build on Strong Finish

The Marcus Freeman era didn’t begin with a bang. Notre Dame lost its opening game of 2022 to Ohio State 21-10. There’s no embarrassment there. But the Irish followed that up with a loss to Marshall. A month later was a loss to Stanford and Notre Dame was 3-3. But the Irish went on to win six of their last seven games, including a win over No. 5 Clemson and a victory in the Gator Bowl over South Carolina. Still, the eight regular-season wins put the Irish under last year’s win total of 8.5.

But the arrival of Hartman from Wake Forest has Notre Dame thinking about bigger things this season. Over the last two years, Hartman has thrown for nearly 8,000 yards and 77 touchdowns with the Demon Deacons. Now he has one of the best offensive lines in the country protecting him and a solid group of running backs. Hartman isn’t going to throw the ball 508 times as he did in 2021. But the 2023 Notre Dame stats will be better in the passing department. The Irish will be content to take what the defense gives them. If teams try to stop the run, Notre Dame will pass. If teams play soft, Notre Dame can run at them. It’s a good position to be in.

The defense will have to replace a few key people at defensive end and safety. There’s plenty of talent at the defense end, but also plenty of questions. Jordan Botelho, Javontae Jean-Baptiste, and NaNa Osafo-Mensah will be among those in the mix-up front. The Irish are solid at the cornerback position with Cam Hart and Benjamin Morrison. Oklahoma State transfer Thomas Harper will help out in the safety position.

National Championship Odds: Notre Dame Title Not Out of the Question

The Irish were +4000 in the preseason last year, so they’re being given a better chance. That makes sense, as this year’s year’s team will be a better team than Notre Dame was a year ago. The Irish have games against three top college football teams in 2023. If Notre Dame can win two of those games and not stumble against weaker foes, a trip to the playoffs is still possible. You have to get to the title game in order to win it.

Regular Season Wins: Schedule is Tough, But Notre Dame Will be Good

The season win total of 9.0 wins is a good number to hang on the Irish. Notre Dame has a number of games on the schedule it should win handily. But a few tough games will also determine the team’s fate this season. The Irish should win their first four games of the season before hosting Ohio State. Notre Dame played Ohio State tough last year to open the season in Columbus, Ohio. Notre Dame Stadium isn’t one of the biggest college football stadiums, but it’s a tough place for road teams to visit.

The Irish will host USC on Oct. 14 in a revenge game. The Trojans gave the Irish their only loss down the stretch last season. Three weeks later, the Irish travel to face Clemson in a game the Tigers no doubt have circled on the schedule. Notre Dame completely dominated Clemson 35-14 last season.

Notre Dame will have to win at least one of the ‘Big Three’ games on its 2023 calendar to get more than nine wins. It’s not one of the worst NCAAF predictions to call for the Irish to reach double digits in victories this season.

To Make Playoffs: Irish Have Realistic Shot

Notre Dame was +1100 to make the playoffs last season and didn’t come close. This year is a different story, however. The Irish will be a better offensive team, which will show in the 2023 Notre Dame stats. The defense isn’t bad and can be better if a few newcomers perform to expectations. But again, it’s going to boil down to how Notre Dame performs in its three key games. The Irish must win at least two of those games to have any shot at the playoffs.
