The Cincinnati Bengals ended their injury-marred season on a high note, beating Cleveland 31-14 last Sunday. With Cleveland resting most of its starters to prepare for the playoffs, the Bengals (9-8) overwhelmed their rival to finish above .500 for the third straight season.
Joe Mixon paced the Bengals with 111 yards on 14 carries (7.9 average). He also scored two touchdowns, including one receiving. Mixon’s 1-yard touchdown run was the 49th of his career, moving him to second on the franchise’s all-time list behind Pete Johnson’s 64.

Joe Mixon saved his best performance for last, topping 100 yards rushing for the first time since last season’s AFC Divisional Round victory over Buffalo (20 carries, 105 yards). Mixon also scored multiple touchdowns for only the second time this season, with the other instance coming in a Week 13 overtime victory over Jacksonville.
Despite that, the former Pro Bowler still finished eighth in the NFL in rushing with 1,034 yards and scored 12 touchdowns (nine rushing, three receiving). His 257 carries were fifth-most. He’s now surpassed 1,000 yards in four of his first seven seasons in the Nhttps://www.pointspreads.com/nfl/FL.
The Bengals — who lost star quarterback Joe Burrow to injury midseason — finished second-to-last in the NFL in rushing with an average of 89.8 yards per game. Only Tampa Bay (88.8) was less productive on the ground. The Bengals were also 22nd in total offense and averaged just 21.5 points, according to NFL scores.
Mixon’s previous season high came in a Week 8 victory over San Francisco in which he rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Mixon curiously surpassed 70 yards just twice over the next 10 NFL games and finished with 15 or fewer carries six times during that span.
Odds Outlook
Despite Mixon’s strong finish to the season, bettors won’t find him up for any major awards like MVP or Offensive Player of the Year. Those races are all but wrapped up, and Mixon’s name is nowhere to be found on NFL odds boards. Mixon had been held under 80 yards rushing in 14 of his previous 16 games and rounded out the season averaging just 60.8 yards per game.
The Bengals finished last place in the AFC North with a 9-8 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020. They’d been projected for 11.5 wins and were among the Super Bowl favorites at +1000, but Joe Burrow’s season-ending wrist injury derailed whatever hopes existed. Upon taking over, Jake Browning went 4-3 as a starter with 1,936 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. But it wasn’t enough to keep the Bengals in contention. A Week 16 loss to rival Pittsburgh ended their three-game winning streak and ultimately derailed their NFL wild card odds.
After agreeing last summer to restructure his four-year, $48 million contract that he’d signed in 2020, Mixon may not be long for Cincinnati. Running backs have seen their value decrease over the years and with Mixon set to turn 28 in July, the Bengals could opt to save cap space by going younger at the position. Chase Brown, a fifth-rounder out of Illinois, showed promise as a rookie with 179 yards on 44 carries (4.1 average). It remains to be seen which direction Cincinnati will turn.
