Bengals Team History

The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional football team based in Ohio, USA. The origins of the team date back to 1937, when the first team carried the name Cincinnati Bengals. The Cincinnati Bengals joined the American Football League shortly after their creation in 1968. Two years later, the AFL would merge with the NFL to begin the process into what we know of the NFL today. The Bengals have had a mixed history with periods of success and disappointment.

In the 1980s, the Bengals became a force to be reckoned with in the NFL, reaching the Super Bowl twice. However, they lost both games to the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the team being around for most of the modern NFL era, they have never won a Super Bowl, reaching three times in 1981, 1988, and 2021. Each year they lost to a team from California.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the team struggled with 14 straight NFL seasons and a losing record. Quarterback Carson Palmer, and afterward Andy Dalton, would start to be the change, since the team made the playoffs six times in seven years, between 2009 and 2015. Even though none of those teams would win a playoff game, the situation was better than the countless losing seasons beforehand.

Some great Cincinnati Bengals standings lead the team to won several division championships, including four in a row from 2011 to 2015. The Bengals have had several standout NFL players over the years, including Anthony Munoz, who is widely regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in football history.

In recent years, the Bengals have struggled to replicate their past success, but they remain a competitive team. In the 2021 season, they qualified for the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2015 and won their first postseason game since 1990.

Led by quarterback Boomer Esiason and head coach Sam Wyche, the team went on a remarkable run that included victories over the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Houston Oilers.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bengals have also had some impressive performances over the years. In 1981, the team set a franchise record for the fewest points allowed in a season, giving up just 246 points over the course of 16 games. Led by defensive stars like Ken Riley and Reggie Williams, the team’s stout defense helped them to a 12-4 record and a playoff berth that season.
