San Francisco 49ers History

The San Francisco 49ers were founded in 1944, playing their first season in 1946 in the All-America Football Conference. In 1949 the AFL merged with the NFL, and the 49ers played their first season in the NFL in 1950. The team went on to be one of the best franchises in NFL history, going to the Super Bowl seven times and winning five. From 1981, when they won their first Super Bowl, to 2002, the 49ers missed the playoffs just four times.

During this long playoff run, the San Francisco 49ers team stats were headlined by wide receiver Jerry Rice and quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young, who were the face of the 49ers for that long playoff run. The 49ers’ team stats were the best in football for two decades, solidifying themselves as one of the elite franchises in the NFL.
