The Capitals are Changing?

The Washington Capitals are hoping to make one more strong push towards the second and final Wild Card berth in the Eastern Conference with 15 NHL games remaining in the regular season. With 73 points, they sit one point behind the Detroit Red Wings (who are on a seven-game losing streak) entering Monday when the Caps play the Calgary Flames on the road.

Washington picked up a hard 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night, with goals from forwards Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson coming in the second period after trailing 1-0 in the first frame.

Goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 21 saves on 22 shots faced to earn the victory. It’s projected he will get the nod between the pipes for this hockey game tonight in Calgary.

The 30-year-old Lakeville, Minnesota native has a 17-11-5 record with a 2.61 goals-against average, a .914% save percentage, and four shutouts in 34 starts this hockey season. This is the most starts he’s ever had in an NHL season and is his second straight year with over 30 starts for Washington.

Flames Stamped Out?

The Calgary Flames are still mathematically alive in the Western Conference Wild Card race. We are just over a month away from the start of the Stanley Cup NHL Playoffs.

With six victories in their last ten games, the Flames have 71 points, which is eight points back of the Vegas Golden Knights, who hold the final Wild Card spot heading into Monday. The Flames host the Washington Capitals, entrenched in their own Wild Card race and fading fast in the Eastern Conference.

Calgary beat the Montreal Canadiens by a final score of 5-2 on Saturday thanks to a pair of early goals. Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar had three assists and veteran Nazem Kadri scored his 23rd goal of the season on a power play 61 seconds into the third period.

Rookie Goaltender Dustin Wolf made 36 saves on 38 shots faced for his second straight NHL victory since being recalled from their AHL farm team last week when starter Jacob Markstrom went down with an NHL injury.

Wolf had a six-game win streak with the Wranglers, who share the Saddledome with the Flames, before his call-up. He’s showing the front office why he deserves to, at least, be the backup for the club. He’s projected to start in goal for this contest tonight.
